Semi-Permanent hair dye CAN DO MAJOR HARM. Serious, permanent harm physically and emotionally. Even when done by a hairdresser.

My mother dyed my hair with semi-permanent at a similar age. I have only a handful of baby/toddler pictures with my natural colour. It was some spray stuff she put on in the summer to lighten my hair, the stuff was meant to wash out. I ended up dealing with an extremely sensitive scalp, pustules, and what I called "clumpy scalp" (the scalp was damaged and couldn't shed properly so I would get big lumps of unshed scalp cells that were very itchy and painful and would get infected from scratching and build up).

It was an awful thing to deal from a tiny 3 year old through the early years of primary. She used to have to comb out the lumps but refused to believe it was the dye (she was a hairdresser too, but they don't teach much about children's scalps apparently!). She moved on to permanent colours before I was out of primary through until I moved out in high school to get a brighter effect. I have never coloured my hair since, and I still live with a painful, itchy scalp, having to use metal combs to clear away the bumps and use special products.

It's far less pain than when I was little, but it's still something I will like have to deal with the rest of my life because my hairdresser mother thought I looked better blonde (my natural colour is an ashy brown). And that was likely the most painful lesson of all - the constant colouring gave me the lesson from an early age that I wasn't good enough, that I needed to change for other people to like me, that there was something wrong with me that my mother needed to fix. I now wear cloth caps at all times unless in private (I even wore them to give birth) because I feel more confident when I just keep it private because my hair was public domain and constantly under pressure as a child/young adult from my family.

Grin Sorry Juno

I thought you'd set her up but clearly not. Have some Wine to take to bed.

Here are the ingredients for LaRiche Directions, a demi-permanent hair colour which coats the hair but doesn't penetrate the cuticle:

Aqua, Cetearyl Alcohol, Distearoylethyl Hydroxyethylmonium Methosulfate (and)Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth ?20, Butylene Glycol, Glyceryl Stearate, Citric Acid, Methylparaben. May contain: Basic Brown 17, Basic Brown 16, Basic Red 76, Basic Yellow 57, Acid Violet 43, Basic Green 4, Basic Red 46, Basic Orange 2, Basic Violet 4, Basic Violet 14, Basic Blue 7, Basic Blue 9, Basic Violet 2, H.C Yellow 4, H.C Yellow 2, H.C Orange 1, H.C Red 1, H.C Red 3, Acid Red 87, Acid Green 1.

Because I'm a bore, I'm aware that toxicity studies on the reds have shown worrying symptoms in rats which were force fed neat dye. None of them died or developed cancers, however. It's generally not advised to force-feed neat dye to one's children.

Some of you chemists might have a problem with the ingredients of Directions, in which case please share hunz :) To me they look like the ingredients of most shampoos, conditioners and moisturising lotions. You wouldn't eat them, mind.

Blush about posting turgid detail on a fun thread, sorry! I was looking this stuff up earlier today, so felt compelled to share.

Crikeyblimey · 24/11/2012 00:53

I always have a chortle at the "has no chemicals in" line. What's it made of then? Art?

TysonsMummy · 24/11/2012 00:55

That's really horrid, Grrr. Your mother tried to change you, basically :(

This is doubtless an obvious point but you have been checked for psoriasis, haven't you? It's quite often restricted to the scalp (but may flare up elsewhere if you get very run down).

Glad you found the cloth cap solution, though very sorry you needed to.

GrrrArghZzzzYaayforall8nights · 24/11/2012 01:01

Actually, it was an "herbal" spray mixture that was popular at the time for "not having chemicals in it" (which is obviously rubbish, everything does). I didn't have bleach used on me until I was 9 when my mother wanted a proper blonde job done.

Seriously, they aren't meant for children's scalps, using them significantly increases the likelihood of skin conditions on the scalp of your child. It likely won't happen all at once unless an allergic reaction happens, but once it happens it will have to managed for a lifetime.

GetorfsaMotherfuckingMorrisMan · 24/11/2012 01:02

Grrrr you poor thing. I am sorry that you suffered.

Gran dyed my hair for years with sun in (natural hair is reddish blonde, she hated any hint of ginger), and then when I hit 8 out came the toni perms.

I ended up dying my hair for years even after leaving home, only lately have stopped doing so.

Fuck knows why she so desperately wanted a marilyn blonde girl. She was a nutcase, however.

I am very sorry for how you have suffered,a dn how you feel.

TysonsMummy · 24/11/2012 01:04

grrrargh anything that lightens is bleach unless its just lemon juice or cassia what cant do that unless u got a bad allergy
and thats you this is my son its diffrent cuz its not a dye its just a colour i know what im doing i did hair dressing 3 years and i only done the tips not the scalp

OP posts:
foxy6 · 24/11/2012 01:08

Tyson. I wouldn't worry too much about everyone else they are judging you when they don't know you. I don't think any caring mother would do anything to harm their child and you checked the dye first chose the safest you could and only done the tips so it wasn't on the scalp. As for ear percing I don't know where everyone else lives but I often see little ones with their ears perced, although personaly I don't agree with it as that is permanent and should be decided when the child is old enough to understand. As for the hair dye it will wash out and I'm sure you son loves it just like My boys liked having their hair spiked with gel and their nails painted.

I shall now duck at the backlash of putting nail varnish on little boys .

MrsRhettButler · 24/11/2012 01:11

You won't get that here foxy.

Tbh op, I don't know why you won't post the name of the dye you used?

TysonsMummy · 24/11/2012 01:14

TysonsMummy I'm going to be really rude now, but I'm doing it to be helpful. Feel free to report (never had a deleted post before and I need to tick that box on my MN membership card anyway).

People aren't sure whether this is a genuine thread or whether you're either a troll or a regular poster taking the piss. One of the reasons for this is that you don't use capitals, except for names, and you don't have any punctutation except for !s. It's also the use of hun and lol, and the fact that in your very first post you start a thread about why it's ok to dye a toddler's hair. The question of when it's ok to pierce a child's ears is one that causes a heated row here every few months and this feels like one step up from that.

If you are genuine, then I'd drop this thread as it's going nowhere for you. Have a look at Classics, as I suggested earlier. Look round the other threads for something that interests you (ideally not in AIBU though, other places are gentler). If you use capitals and punctuation in real life, then use them here.

Hope that helps.

TysonsMummy, it's not up to me in the slightest what threads people make. I just thought it might help to explain a bit why you're getting some sceptical reactions. Goodnight and good luck.

GrrrArghZzzzYaayforall8nights · 24/11/2012 01:58

As I said, it's an international shop. The US version tends to pop up first.

Switch regions or use this one.
