To be surprised I am a "high" user of gas??

Just got my gas bill today, together with an annual statement which shows how much gas I have used over the last 12 months. According to British Gas, I am a "high" user of gas. I am a bit surprised by this. I live in a very small 3 bedroom terrace. It is very hard to keep it warm, but I am quite conscious about being careful not to have the heating on too much. It's always off during the night. Might put it on in the morning for a short while but not always. Comes back on when dd gets home from school. Set at 20. Already wear lots of fleece at home to keep warm.

Tell me I am not that unusual???

Do you have the loft insulated?

Have you have your boiler serviced to make sure it's working efficiently?

thekidsrule · 22/11/2012 22:23

what do they call high

Dozer · 22/11/2012 22:25

I thought you were talking about gas and air and being high on it!

FredFredGeorge · 22/11/2012 22:31

20 is high, therefore I'm not that surprised, whilst it may not be on that much that you think, it'll be working quite hard all the time. 18 is the normal target for healthy people. Pensioners may well have an advanatage from warmer.

How much kWh have you used over the year roughly? Heating used to use about 90% of our gas, when I was at home on ML it was about 25000 kWh per year.

From British Gas website:

The prices quoted above are as follows : low energy consumption of 10,000 kwh for gas and 1,650 for single rate electricity, average user consumption of 20,500 kwh for gas and 3,300 kwh for electricity and for high energy user the consumption figures have been based upon 28,000 kwh for gas and 4,950 for single tariff electricity.

If you are using over 28000 kWh in a 3 bedroom house, I should think you need to get your insulation or your meter looked at. You probably have solid walls but do you have double glazing, loads of loft insulation and draughtproofing? it must be costing you a fortune.

Yes, my boiler has been serviced but not sure about loft insulation. Probably not. Really crappy windows too.

Fred - 18 is pretty low for living areas. At least for me - I find it very cold.

Fossil - it was 21490.
Yes solid wall. Can't replace windows because it would cost quite a few thousand to do so. Basically a typical victorian house that's hard to keep warm.

That's not way high is it? Weird, must be some marketing thing.

WhereYouLeftIt · 22/11/2012 22:58

Actually I think that is quite high for the size of house. We are also in an old house, solid walls, single-glazing throughout. We had the loft insulated (for free, by British Gas!) and it made a huge difference to our usage. Maybe worth looking onto, OP?

SpeckleDust · 22/11/2012 22:59

Ours is a 3 bed Victorian semi, high ceilings, single glazed sash windows which we can't afford to replace as it is vvvv expensive due to being in conservation area.

Gas central heating and hot water plus gas hob comes in at a ridiculous 36000kwh per year. Lofts are insulated and I am currently addressing draughts and looking at getting insulated blinds/curtains. Only have the heating on for 2 hours in morning and from about 6-10pm at night (set at 18C).

RyleDup · 22/11/2012 23:02

Crikey, is 20 high? I have ours set at 22. I really feel the cold. Our gas bills arent that bad though, or maybe they are. Whats the average people pay?
