For my son's 2nd birthday - I could make one And it would be nice/good but not wow - I kind of want wow! Or am I just being silly? Just trying to work out if the money is worth less stress!

I had one made for my little boy's first birthday. £40 for an amazing 'Scout the dog' cake I couldn't even have begun to make myself. And it was gluten free for MIL and tasted lush Smile I say go for it!

ladygoldenlion · 22/11/2012 17:58

Depends who it's for - if for family / adults then yes, go for it. If it's for 2 year olds then buy one from a supermarket for a tenner!

Cosmostocupcakes · 22/11/2012 18:42

Live abroad so cake would be expensive (£100 +) and supermarket cake all tastes like"boxed cake" and looking at £20 for a smallish plain one :( I know I should/could make it but just want it to be perfect!

I have absolutely no artistic talent and have still managed to make birthday cakes that look like a Dalek, the Millenium Falcon and a dinosaur amongst others.

Seriously you can do it - you know you want tooGrin

greencheddar · 22/11/2012 19:33

Yanbu to want to have one made but that is a lot to spend for a 2 year olds birthday. I'm shit at baking so I'm going to make a sweet cake for dd's birthday

MammaTJ · 22/11/2012 19:36

What sort of cake do you want? It isn't that difficult (in my eyes anyway) to make an easy but stunning one. You tube has a lot of instructional videos, which is how I started. Have a look at my profile, I have cakes on there and I am mostly self taught.

I made a great duckpond cake for dgs 2nd birthday. It was very easy with white icing and angelica grass/reeds,a blue icing pond and toy ducks swimming on it. He called it his 'Zachary Quack' cake.

Cosmostocupcakes · 23/11/2012 05:27

A Mickey Mouse cake! I think I will give it a go - made a duck last year! Thanks for the input! :)

Where on earth does cake cost £20-100?! Oh my and holy craps!

Pascha · 23/11/2012 05:52

God I would and have! £45 for a tractor cake far better looking moister and tastier than I could manage and best of all I don't have to faff about making it. I hate making cakes. I hate the mess. I hate the mediocre result. I hate the stress. I love someone else taking all that hassle away.

Whatdoiknowanyway · 23/11/2012 07:59

I felt like you and bought a cake for DD1's 3rd birthday. Then we had a great nanny who decorated brilliant cakes. I made the cake and she decorated it, we were a good team. When she left the girls still wanted home made cakes so I had to learn to do it and got better over the years. I've made a swimming pool, a bowling alley, a bed and I forget what else. They are still convinced that birthday cakes have to be homemade. It can be nice for a small child to know that an adult who loves them made their cake (and apparently nice for adults too, mine are now grown up).

Sokmonsta · 23/11/2012 10:15

Yanbu. But I'm a fan of homemade cakes. For various reason's dd's birthday cakes have been shop bought for her 4 years. I've cried each time (sad I know as she doesn't realise). I managed to make ds one for his second birthday and was utterly thrilled I had done it - none too complicated. Sponge cake, green buttercream and ready coloured icing to make a 'timmy' timmy time sheep.

I'd go for making homemade every time if I could as it's a labour of love for me. My mum did it for us and set the bar high!

MrsMangoBiscuit · 23/11/2012 10:20

I love making DD's birthday cakes. I make my own too, and one for DH if I get time. If I was better at it I'd love to make them to sell, then I'd get to make birthday cakes all year round!

But no, YANBU.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 23/11/2012 10:23

If you want to and you can afford it then have it. It's not at all unreasonable.

cozietoesie · 23/11/2012 10:24

Cake can be surprisingly expensive in other countries, Kermit. I recall when we were in Spain that the done thing was to take cake as a guest gift if you were going to a dinner party - cake was so costly and difficult and wine was pennies. (Pre-Euro days though.)

KermitRuffinsTrumpet · 23/11/2012 13:01

That seems so odd, cozie . I had no idea.

Oh YANBU, OP. If you can afford it and it is what you want to do then do it.

LadyMaryCrawley · 23/11/2012 13:09

I can't wait to make mad cakes for my dc! But then, I am quite fond of faffing about in the kitchen with icing and whatnot. And if you have other DC who are old enough to help it is a nice way to involve them too.

YANBU, it's entirely up to you!
