Smoking and drinking at 7 months pregnant... AIBU to be very concerned about the health of a friend's unborn child?

How big are the risks? He told me that she admitted to him that she'd drunk a bottle of vodka on Saturday night, and she was chuffing away on her cigarettes (virtually chain-smoking) all through our bonfire party... I know that the baby can be affected by drugs if any kind from watching CSI but how likely is it to cause noticeable damage? And how long until we know if the poor little thing has suffered?

Thanks

I kind of agree this smacks of 'come hither and slag this woman off with me so I can feel saintly for hoiking my bosom and tut tutting and you can all feel better about yourselves'.

These threads invariably are I'm afraid.

Of course it's awful to drink and smoke during pregnancy.

You know that, she knows that (and presumably doesn't care - as if saying something or giving her leaflets will change that. Does she live on Mars?), we know that...so...ya know.

You're right to be concerned. I don't think there is anything you can do as you obviously don't have the sort of relationship with her that would allow you to discuss it.
I don't see how anyone can think drinking heavily and smoking during pregnancy is anything other than appalling behaviour. It shows total disregard for the health and wellbeing of the baby and that doesn't bode well.
Will your friend have parental responsibility when the baby is born? I think all you can do is support him in any efforts to man up and be a good Dad.
