PLEASE tell me if you have ever seen blood on your LO's sheets when teething

For the past month or so, since DS (15mo) started his latest bout of teething, we have seen 2-3 coin sized patches of browny diluted blood stains on his cot sheets in the morning every few days. I have put this down to teething. But..The other day, when he was in the throws of a bad cough/cold with a temperature, we found a lot more blood on the sheet, freaked out and went to gp who said in her 20 years of being a doctor she had never heard of blood on sheets from teething. Slightly disconcerted now! So, please can you say here whether or not you have ever seen this with your LO so I know whether or not I am being unreasonable to doubt the GP! Thanks xx

Could it be coming from his nose?

Pleasenomorepeppa · 21/11/2012 10:05

My niece used to bleed when teething. What was the Drs view on what was causing the blood??

ReapWhatYouSew · 21/11/2012 10:06

Happens regularly with my youngest.

brainonastick · 21/11/2012 10:06

Nope, and DD2 teethed quite badly. I can see why they might though - I remember some of my own adult teeth bleeding a bit when they came through.

What did the GP say it might be then?

Smokedsalmonbagel · 21/11/2012 10:08

DS2 has had patches of blood on the sheet.

I put it down to teething.

FreddieMercurysBolero · 21/11/2012 10:10

Ds has had blood on his sheets - always from nosebleeds. He has them quite regularly and the evidence is always on his face in the morning.

browneyesblue · 21/11/2012 10:11

Not on his sheets, but we did once find DS's bib covered with bloodstains (brown, watery). We put it down to teething.

MamaMia100 · 21/11/2012 10:21

They still don't know. It's not his nose or ears as no blood in the snotty crust around his nose (nice!) and no gunk in ears. They sent me to pediatric a&e (for 9 hours!) who did blood tests to rule out a bleeding disorder (clotting/platelets all fine) and said it could be coming from stomach (but poo looks normal colour and he's been sick a few times this week and no blood). My theory is it's normally teething but the one incidence of lots of blood was from biting his cheek with new molars (inside of his cheek looks chewed and occasionally bit bloody.). Has anyone had this with their LO (biting cheek with new teeth)? Have to go back to hospital today...
Thanks for all the quick responses!

I definately remember at least one of my children having this but I could see spots of blood on the gum as well. I think it was quite a bit of blood at the time.

Hope all ok with your LO.

Fakebook · 21/11/2012 10:29

Never heard of bleeding whilst teething, but I've only had experience with one dc so far and her first tooth came out at 18 months! Hopefully it is just teeth...20 years of being a doctor isnt very long IMO.

LadyMargolotta · 21/11/2012 10:38

If the inside of his cheeks look a bit bloody, then that probably is your answer- chewing his cheeks while teething.

It's good the doctor has ruled out a clotting disorder.

Bathjelly · 21/11/2012 11:25

DS2 had it, and we put it down to teething, but like you, it appeared when he had a cough/cold. It freaked me out too, but we realised that he was jamming his fingers up his nose in his sleep (when it was runny/blocked), and was scratching the inside of his nose (we needed to cut his nails!!).

MamaMia100 · 21/11/2012 11:28

Anyone else seen this? Really useful to get a rough idea of how common it is, so if you read this, please please please say whether or not your LOs ever dribbled bloody dribble on their sheets while teething (just as useful to know if they didn't as if they did, IYSWIM).
Thank you all very much! I'm sure this thread will serve as a useful resource for many worried mums in the future who have seen the same thing, freaked out, and turned to mumsnet to look for evidence of similar stories for reassurance Smile

Ds could bleed profusely from his nose but still have no crusty dried blood in his nose or on his face. Sometimes his cot would be covered in blood.

DragonMamma · 21/11/2012 11:31

DS is a few months older than yours but he regularly had watered down blood on his grobags from teething.

Common sense would say that a tooth breaking.through a gum would possibly mean some blood?

valiumredhead · 21/11/2012 11:32

Oh and the bad temper sounds very much like a nose bleed ime - ds would often ge them, and still does, when he is angry, hot or tired.

spiderlight · 21/11/2012 11:38

My DS did occasionally have very watery brown bloodstains on his sheets when teething.

JoandMax · 21/11/2012 11:44

DS1 used to have bleeding gums occassionally when teething, mostly on his bib or whatever he was chewing!

It's good they are looking into it though

MoelFammau · 21/11/2012 11:45

DD had this once... I think she scratched her tongue or something with her new sharp tooth.

Could it be that simple? Hoping it is!

MamaMia100 · 21/11/2012 11:46

Bathjelly, that's interesting because my DS's nails were too long and razor sharp last week, so I also wondered whether he had poked at his sore mouth/gums and scratched himself... All this is really reassuring me that it is coming from his mouth rather than anywhere further down and more sinister though.

I must be really lax because I just changed the sheets and thought 'Oh a bit of blood, wonder where that's from?" and thought nothing more of it.

everybodysang · 21/11/2012 11:54

My daughter once had blood running down her chin when she was teething, it was horrible! And we have had it once on the sheet around the same time.

MamaMia100 · 21/11/2012 12:10

Valiumredhead, I expect that's why the GP and paediatric registrar at the hospital hadn't heard of it before. Most mums would do that! I did for weeks until there was really quite a lot of it one morning.

MamaMia100 · 21/11/2012 12:14

Everybodysang, my DD had blood running down her chin once too, which is why I didn't freak out initially with the blood on the sheets, although she had her molars coming through at the time and had massive blood-filled blisters over them. Actually, while we were in hospital DS started whinging and putting his finger in his mouth then started dribbling blood. It does seem to me like it must be coming from his mouth, at least I really hope that is the case. As some of you have said, its good they're looking into it though and not just dismissing it as probably teething, as I originally did Blush

I think there's been dried blood from teething, but it could also be a bit of dried sick? Weetabix vomit looks a bit like blood when it's dried, I've found.
