...to expect the price shown on a price label at IKEA

to be the price that I get charged at the checkout, and not told that the price only applies to those with an IKEA 'Family Card'?

Create and craft tv channel do this. The big price highlighted in the bottom corner of the screen is only for people who have paid for a years membership. The price for everyone else is under it but much smaller. It's annoying.

If you're expecting it, fine. But how are customers supposed to expect it? They wind you up by making you walk around the whole bloody shop for one thing, then they rub salt in the wound by not displaying (or not clearly displaying) the price, then you do not find out until you have queued at the checkout!

B&Q are another offender, looking at laminate the price in big numbers is the price per sq ft (or whatever measurement it is) but in the top corner in smaller writing is the price per pack which is more expensive. Also looked at beading for the laminate which was on a small sticker (approx 2in x 2in) again the price per foot showing as the cheaper price in bigger numbers rather than the price for the whole thing.

I also hate that ikea show you a piece of furniture e.g a wardrobe but then you see the stickers for each door, the hanging rail, door knobs etc, I know its so you can have it how you want it but sometimes i just want a regular wardrode with doors and a hanging rail with one set price instead of having to tally up everything then realising its more than i wanted to pay

The two prices are ALWAYS displayed, quite clearly. They use the same labels all over the world, and it is quite easy to see that there are two prices.
In fact there is another label next to it that says "why are there two prices?" or similar, explaining about the family card and how you can get one in store.

YABU. You made a mistake and blamed someone else.

greenplastictrees · 20/11/2012 21:12

I agree, it's not that clear. Luckily DP was more alert than me and spotted it. He didn't expect the self checkout to try and charge us £2068 for a £14 picture frame though! Pleased we spotted that one although not sure my card would have liked it!

Pseudonym99 · 20/11/2012 22:14

@Cellenia - the two prices are not quite clearly displayed. Lots who have already replied state that the full price is smaller then the fantasy price - therefore they are not as clearly displayed as each other. It is a deliberate attempt to deceive.

One being bigger than the other does not mean they are not both clearly displayed. One is bigger, but neither is particularly small. It is not an attempt to decieve at all.
Perhaps you need new glasses?

Selks · 20/11/2012 22:31

Am I the only one to have not realised that the Ikea family card is not just for families?? Blush

TraineeBabyCatcher · 20/11/2012 22:40

Less deceiving, more attempting to entice you into taking out their loyalty card.
I've always found Ikea to be very clear about everything. They have maps so you can skip sections you don't want.

Pseudonym99 · 20/11/2012 22:58

@Cellenia - if one is smaller than the other then it is not as clear as the other. But I only saw one price. What about those for whom new glasses wouldn't make a difference? It is taking advantage. It is unethical. I won't be going there again if this is how they treat people.

People mess up. It was probably an error. I can honestly tell you that there's no deep dark IKEA conspiracy to swindle you out of your cash, well, not that I'm allowed to tell you about anyway...

FWIW, Family item price labels (so for items that are always two prices) can only be printed with the two prices on - it's not possible to do it any other way, it's generated centrally even if it's printed in store. It's possible it was an 'offer of the month' item but afaik they did the same, it's designed to minimise co-worker error.

Disclaimer: not speaking officially on behalf of anyone, just personal FYI.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 20/11/2012 23:15

It's called a Family card because we are all (co-workers and shoppers) one big bitchy, dysfunctional family.

Really.

Pseudonym99 · 20/11/2012 23:37

Well, if there were two prices on the label the real price must have been really small - it certainly wasn't obvious. I'm not accusing them of trying to swindle me out of my money - I would have paid the higher price. I am accusing them of being dishonest, deceitful, unethical and untrustworthy. And I wish I had not gone into the bloody shop in the first place.

But fair enough, it may have been unintentional. Which is why everyone should always err on the side of caution and put the real price in the biggest font!
