To want to see evidence from boyfriend before handing over £850?

Last night, boyfriend of 4 months booked a flights to New York for us. Total cost being £1700. He earns much more than I do so this isn't a huge deal to him, to me, it's a huge amount of money.

I did insist however on paying half and that isn't a problem, I have the money but rather than it being a bit of pocket change like it is with him, it's taken me a LONG time to save up.

It occurred to me that I don't even have any evidence of him booking anything and to be fair, 4 months isn't really that long to know anybody. He could be fleecing me!!

AIBU to ask to see the booking confirmation? it seems so untrusting but £850 is a LOT of money to me.

oh sorry Blush

missed that bit in the op (half asleep)

Sallyingforth · 19/11/2012 09:44

There doesn't seem to be much trust in your relationship OP.
Just that.

BupcakesAndCunting · 19/11/2012 09:47

I bet he would put your money into a pyramid scheme.

DO NOT GIVE IT TO HIM.

If he tries any funny business, set your DS onto him.

PickledFanjoCat · 19/11/2012 09:48

It seems odd to insist on paying half when he offered to pay and then get suspicious about it.

It's quite normal to ask for a copy if the itinerary, pay when you have had it.

Bossybritches22 · 19/11/2012 09:53

mmmmn yes you do need the passport to make the booking as it has to be exactly the same details or it isn't valid.

Are you sure he HAS made it?

If in any doubt say you're broke this month, unforseen expenses with DS, let him treat you.

That way if he's genuine you get a lovely treat.

If not you aren't ripped off.

Save your independant pay-my-way stance for later.

LadyBeagle · 19/11/2012 10:02

Like others I thought you'd been going out together for 9 months Confused.
Or do you have two boyfriends?

StuntGirl · 19/11/2012 10:07

I almost always insist on going halves, and certainly in a situation like this. I have never liked the feeling of 'owing' somebody anything, even if it is traditional. I would never dream of letting someone pay almost a grand for a holiday abroad for me! Don't think that bit is the bit to be concerned about.

squeakytoy · 19/11/2012 10:21

Cant wait for the Op to come back and answer these ones..

TheWholeEnchilada · 19/11/2012 10:24

He wouldn't have needed OP's passport to make the booking - those details can be entered at a later date (DP and I do it this way every year when we book flights to visit family in the US).

I do find it a bit odd, OP, if you're paying for half the cost that you weren't involved at all in the booking. Hmm

Are you genuinely suspicious of his intentions?

I didn't explain myself very well - the only information you need at the time of the booking is the passenger's name as it is listed on the passport. The actual passport number and other details can be added in later, after the booking is complete. (We just booked a ticket for DC2 who hasn't even been born yet, so definitely no passport number required at the time of booking - but we do have to stick to the name now!) Grin

Cabrinha · 19/11/2012 10:32

Moomie, he should be taking her away?!! WTAF?
What he should be doing, is planning breaks with her that suit both their incomes.
There's nothing wrong with a new partner paying if they want to, but it should not be an expectation!

DontmindifIdo · 19/11/2012 10:35

Flights to the states - yep, he'll need your passport details if he's actually booked it.

Also you said you'd been going out for 8 months and was going on holiday with your DCs too, so wouldn't you be paying for more than half if you're paying for them?

TakeMyEyesButNotTheGoat · 19/11/2012 10:36

Going by your post the other day and this one today, the alarm bells are ringing in your ears OP.

Why are you ignoring them?

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 19/11/2012 10:48

Hmm so something odd going on?

MoomieAndFreddie · 19/11/2012 11:37

cabrinha

i spent 8 years with a tight fisted arsehole who never took me on holiday despite earning plenty of money....i am now with someone who loves to spoil me and loves to take me on holiday. so perhaps i am biased :)

SusanneLinder · 19/11/2012 11:41

You need ESTA to go to the States. You wont be allowed on the flight without it.

I think I would be asking a few more questions.Of the BF and the OP actually :o

PanickingIdiot · 19/11/2012 11:55

£850 is a LOT of money to me.

The maybe you shouldn't be going on this trip. You sound like you resent paying this much, but I take it it's not mandatory that you go?

I did insist however on paying half

Why should you NOT pay half?

I don't even have any evidence of him booking anything

Why didn't you look for a cheaper flight and booked it yourself, then?

Sorry, but I don't really understand why are you going on this trip in the first place if you 1. can't afford it and 2. don't trust the person you're going with.

Tweasels · 19/11/2012 12:05

OP, you're a fucking idiot. Run along.

What's going on at the minute on here. Tis madness, utter madness.

TakeMyEyesButNotTheGoat · 19/11/2012 12:11

Tweasels - do you suspect the same thing as me? Constant name changer posting about the same issues all the time?

FancyPuffin · 19/11/2012 12:16

Is this the new boxy, the one who keeps posting on Relationships?

TakeMyEyesButNotTheGoat · 19/11/2012 12:23

I think so

AnyFucker · 19/11/2012 12:24

Christ, not another Boxy. Mumsnet is full of 'em.

missymoomoomee · 19/11/2012 12:25

Hmmm, son with a broken arm from bodyslamming into gran, a boyfriend of 7/8 months who won't introduce you to his family, now a boyfriend of 4 months who is taking you on holiday. What a busy bunny you are.

TakeMyEyesButNotTheGoat · 19/11/2012 12:27

What does boxy mean? >>clueless
