AIBU?

to think taking your child to see santa this week

is frankly stupid.

It's bad enough people putting their decorations up this week but taking your kids to visit Santa in November under the premise of "it's for the kids" is utter nonsense. It is all about the parent and will probably spoil some of the excitement for the children nearer the date.

YABU and stupid is a bit harsh Hmm

Each to their own, I say....doesn't affect me!

I love Christmas Grin

To me the over commercialisation for such a long period adds to debt woes for many.

BUT OP the earlier you start the less debt you end up in.

Do you really think so? I think for a lot of people the earlier they start, the more pointless tat stuff they end up buying. Presumably that's why the shops get everything going before Halloween is over.

Depends on the person, If you're a reckless spendthrift, then yes it will end that way.

If you are carefully spreading out your purchases throughout the preceding months, sticking to a list, and seeking out pre Xmas sales and bargains, then no, you needn't find yourself skint in December (or having Crowd Rage and stress)

God there are some right miseries on here!

Enjoy Christmas anyway you like and enjoy seeing everyone else enjoy it in their own way too! That's pretty much my only rule for Christmas!

FromEsme · 17/11/2012 17:51

Some people are miserable at Christmas. Some people have no friends or family. Some are skint. Some don't get on with their families and are dreading it. Some are far from home or have people they love far from home.

Enjoy Christmas your own way, but don't expect everyone to join in the forced jollity.

I'm not, but I won't let anyone rain on my parade either like this thread is trying to do.

Report
FromEsme · 17/11/2012 17:54

No-one's trying to piss on your parade. Some just get fed up of Christmas being shoved down our throats. For some people it's just a misery-fest. You get your enjoyment. Why does EVERYONE have to like it?

Report
valiumredhead · 17/11/2012 17:57

Why does it matter? You do what you want and let others do as they see fit. No one is stupid Hmm

Report
YouOldSlag · 17/11/2012 18:20

Esme, I'm not telling everyone to like it. But I'm not telling everyone they are stupid for doing things too early, like the OP is

Live and let live. I do Christmas my way and I see no reason why to criticise anyone else for doing things their way either. (unlike the OP).

I just think it's a lovely time of year and if people want to take their kids to see Santa in November, then that's great. If not, that's great too. I just don't see it's worth criticising. (unlike the OP)

I have explained why it matters several times on here.

No, you have said people are stupid, it's nonsense and it will spoil the enjoyment. It doesn't matter. Don't do it if you don't want to.

I explained my reasoning at 16:29

If you don't agree with it then fine but I HAVE explained.

I agree Valium. People are free to celebrate Christmas however they like. To label someone as stupid because they do it differently to you is down right rude.

Unfortunately it is shoved down EVERYONE's throat whether we like it or not. I have no choice but to walk down the road and see Christmas decorations in October and November. To see chocolate Santas on the shelf whilst going about doing my regular shopping in October no less.

It just dilutes the actual celebration in December for me.

BTW I haven't labelled people stupid I have said the action is stupid, quite different.

Nope, you have voiced your opinion and expect everyone to agree -which they don't.

I LIKE Christmas starting early - gives me time to spread the cost and get organised. Kids are in school so it's not like they are out shopping every day and seeing the decorations etc.

I hate halloween but I don't complain it's "shoved down my throat" I just ignore it.

Learn to ignore things you don't like otherwise life will be one long complaint!

Report
valiumredhead · 17/11/2012 18:42

Ignore what is not important to you. And perhaps do your shopping on line so you can't see all the --yummy- chocolate santas?

Report
LineRunner · 17/11/2012 18:43

Well in an ideal world it would be lovely if Christmas Evce was the start of the holidays and the Twelve Days of Christmas were the entirety of the festive season, but the last time I tried to buy chocolate tree decorations on Christmas Eve in Asda they had all gone and they were putting out easter eggs. And last posting dates seem to come ever earlier in December.

So Christmas has been 'brought forward' by its commercialisation, yes; but the culprits are the big businesses, not people who just want a little sparkle in their lives in the middle of winter.

Sirzy · 17/11/2012 18:43

What makes it stupid? Just because it's not how you choose to do things doesn't make it wrong or stupid just different.

Why does how anyone else wants to spend their time or money bother you so much?

Yes, I have voiced an opinion, absolutely, and have given reasons to which you replied "why does it matter to you" I replied that I had already explained why it mattered to me.

No I haven't expected everyone to agree at all.

A wee bit easier to ignore Halloween than to ignore Christmas. You'd have to walk around with your eyes closed to not notice it's Christmas.

All the people who're saying don't let it bother you - ok, why not just let people moaning not bother you? If you don't like people moaning about Christmas, just don't open the thread. It works both ways.

We don't start doing Christmas things till December.Everyone is different in their approach and I respect that.
