The Original Rude Boys are a not particularly well known Dublin band and they have turned down what would have been the biggest gig of their lives so far.

They stated that they couldn't be on the stage with Chris Brown because of their stance on domestic violence.

I think it's great to see young bands standing up for what they believe in.

Sunny days should have a health warning, makes you get sharp things in your eyes.

I am not defending Chris Brown, but I find there to be a gross double standard.

Glen Campbell got a tribute this year at the Grammys even though he repeatedly beat his girlfriend, on one occasion knocking out her teeth.

Paul McCarthy is still held as a national treasure even after he stabbed his wife.

John Lennon is still held as an idol of peace and love when his son goes on about the domestic violence he and his mother suffered.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is still loved after being abusive to women in public and beating his much younger girlfriend.

Charlie Sheen is still a praised after being exceedingly violent to his partner.

No one questioned Sean Penn's rehabilitation after he tied Madonna (his then wife) to a chair and beat her with a bat. No one says people should stop working with him. No one wondered why Madonna still cared for him afterwards.

I could go on with so many more examples but the point is clear - these men can be forgiven for what they did and Chris Brown isn't. Why do they get to get away with it? What is different about Chris Brown? It's not lack of remorse (Sheen and Rhys have been very unremorseful, Sheen bragged about it, and I don't know of any to give a public apology about it), it's not society getting better (they are all still in work), what could it be....

And the tattoo is a Día de los Muertos tattoo. Potentially culturally insensitive, as was his recent Halloween costume, but unrelated.

GrrrArghZzzzYaayforall8nights, there's no double standard here, just discussion about a current event.
Charlie Sheen I know about, and will gladly support you if you find any support of him on MN. The others, I haven't heard whatever you apparently have, doesn't make this thread any less worthy of discussion.

GrrrArghZzzzYaayforall8nights · 17/11/2012 02:27

I'm not saying it is isn't worthy of discussion. Or that all these men have support of MN. I'm bringing wider context to a discussion.

There is a double standard as these men have support and forgiveness in the wider public media which is denied to Chris Brown when his actions are comparable/less than theirs. All of the things I listed are public knowledge, brought to public court and/or media, not hidden gossip for few to hear (particularly the Sean Penn-Madonna situation - that was huge news as was her interview afterwards professing her feelings for him and called romantic whereas Rhianna was shamed in the public space for admitting to still care for him).

This band should be supported in their turning their back on Chris Brown -- however there should also be support to turn against all these men and questions should be raised when men are given amnesty for their crimes against women and children. Why are they not shamed and disgraced as Chris Brown is? Surely that is worth being added to the topic?

junowiththegladrags · 17/11/2012 02:35

Grr, I'm off to bed now, will have a look at the people you've mentioned, honestly not being obstructive, genuinely haven't heard their names in regard of domestic violence.

junowiththegladrags · 17/11/2012 02:43

But.. I'll just add that when you say "named and disgraced" I find it hard to reconcile with the public image of either CB or any that you've mentioned.

None of them seem to fit the phrase, unfortunately if what you say is true.

JeezyOrangePips · 17/11/2012 08:26

Am I the only one that thinks turning down the gig will get them more publicity than doing the gig, it's a very clever pr move (not saying its not a genuine decision, but it is also a very savvy one)
