nice change from the usual wotsits and fruitshoots Grin

mil keeps her fruit in a bowl on the table in the living room, she has 3 babied dogs, she buys the fruit for the dc's, which is nice but the dogs go on the table and eat it out of the bowl, she will laugh and say "oh,looks like (dog) has eaten all the oranges, you can have an apple" for example and sometimes picks bits of half eaten fruit out of the bowl

aibu to think thats a bit rank unhygenic? because she doesnt

BonaDea and Twirlyagogo, my dog eats all fruit except bananas and grapes. Grapes are bad for dogs (as are onions and raisins) but other fruits are fine.

Muttdog is never happier when eating a pear - especially ones she has stolen from the veg rack!

Echo you made me laugh. Can't believe he shut him in the car!

I did think the thread title was a bit odd as couldn't think of a reason why they shouldn't have fruit at mil house. Then I read the full post. Yadnbu.

Really LtEve? I've been all PFB with mine for nothing! I knew grapes for sure but thought that fruit acid did something to them - something vague obviously Grin!

The first summer he lived with us my dog decimated our strawberry patch. I caught him peeing on it one day which I'm sure was a deliberate act to stop us eating them. Not sure if he'd go for oranges though, maybe if he had thumbs ...

Dogs DO eat fruit - my dad's love the pears from the tree and the odd apple Grin

It is rank but I wouldn't get too het up about it, they are very unlikely to catch anything and presumably they pet and stroke the dog? It's not that different - still germy. Encourage the kids to wash the fruit before eating.

YANBU. I wouldn't eat it, so wouldn't consider letting kids eat it either. It's not hygienic, and I'm sure there's some zoonoses from canine saliva.

Dogs do sometimes choose to eat strange things - we had a dog who got onto the kitchen table once purely so he could eat some cooked red cabbage. Needless to say, however, we didn't eat what was left, and we kept the chairs tucked in after that (it was a small dog, so he had to use the chairs as a staging post!)

My dog has no interest in fruit, and he's a greedy pig who'll eat anything.

BonaDea · 16/11/2012 16:06

Our family dogs have never shown any interest in fruit, so am interested to hear about this!

I'd just give the fruit a quick wash, then surely it's fine?
