AIBU?

to find this vegetarian menu option rather uninspiring?

Our family are going to stay in a hotel tomorrow night. A relatively smart place, with a spa and a '2AA rosette award winning River Room Restaurant'. The dds and I are vegetarian, so I had a look at the hotel's menu on their website. The options for main course include:

  • Line caught skate wing pan fried with capers, lemon, nut brown butter - £17 (sounds nice if you eat fish)

  • Roast cornfed chicken breast, sage, onion, bread sauce - £15 (sounds nice if you eat chicken)

  • Plate of carrots (vegetarian) - £12.95 Hmm

To be fair, they do also have a tomato risotto - but on what planet does a 'plate of carrots' count as a main course? And how can you justify charging £12.95 for it?

I think we'll be visiting a restaurant in the town instead.

We used to go to a lovely little bistro-style restaurant where there were no vegetarian dishes on the menu at all. You simply asked the waiter for a vegetarian meal, and the chef would come to your table and chat about what you fancied eating today - he made the most amazing veggie meals.

Well nothing yet from the hotel on their Facebook page but the question has attracted quite a lot of attention! 2 more posts and 33 'likes'!!

OP here again. After breakfast I asked a waitress about the plate of carrots.

Me: I saw on your dinner menu there is a vegetarian option of a plate of carrots. I'd that just a plate of carrots, or something else?

Waitress: it is a plate of carrots, but not as you know it. There's carrot and sweet potato mash, a savoury carrot cake, and grated carrots with...swede...or something. It's very nice.

Hmm

do you know I love carrots - if it was what the waitress described I would order it!
It sounds like one of the dishes they do on masterchef - "carrots three ways"

It still sounds mostly like 'a plate of carrots' albeit vamped up with the addition of , err, more orangy root vegatables Grin

Sounds like they were trying to be understated in their description, but agree "Carrots three ways" might have sounded more tempting.

But no protein?

Or maybe after all this attention, Mumsnet, Facebook etc. they've quickly decided to fancy up their carrots a bit Grin

Carrots three ways?! PMSL. That's 3 side dishes, not a meal. And I wouldn't choose three carrot based side dishes anyway.

Anybody on here ever had a carrot threeway?

So it sounds like a main course of mash and coleslaw?!with carrot cake?!for £13?are they crazy?

'Carrots three ways' sounds like some sort of torturous BDSM practice.

12.95 for a plate of carrots, though...that is a BRAVE piss taking price.

Op - if I PayPal you £12.95 will you go & order it & post a full review with pictures?

I know otherwise my curiosity will get the better of me & I'll find myself on the train heading to Bedford...

Should this thread be linked to the Bedford Swan somehow so the management can understand how poor their vegetarian option is?can it be linked on their facebook page or something?!

Sorry, we've left the hotel and are back at home now so it wouldn't be possible for me to order it even if you paid me! I don't think I would have wanted to have it even if someone paid me, anyway.

Have they never heard the saying 'variety is the spice of lifex'?
And that does sound suspiciously like what the poster further up the thread said Shock
