DS's school has a lollipop person (she is ace) who helps them cross over the road right outside of the school. I stand across the road as DS(8) feels like a big boy crossing "himself". He knows to wait till she's in the road and everything's stopped. All the children are really good actually, good road safety awareness in general.

SO WHY DO PEOPLE SEE THE LOLLIPOP PERSON STICK HER BIG LOLLIPOP OUT, WATCH HER STEP OUT AND KEEP GOING! FFS!

She waits for a lull, not like she's leaping out in dark clothing. They just don't stop for her.

She nearly got run over a few weeks ago and today 3 vans went through when she was clearly indicating and trying to step out with 30+ children waiting at the side of the road. How she doesn't whack the cars as they go by in a rage I'll never know.

The dark nights are coming too, is there anything I can do other than suppress my seething rage at the other side of the road? If I ring the council will they send someone out to take reg plates? Can the police do anything?

I'm not wrong (I don't think!) yes, they must stop if they are signalled to do so. They only signal once on the road. If they are on the road, then traffic must stop. They don't signal to stop the traffic when they are still on the pavement.

Hope that made sense!

our lollipop man shouts abuse at them! nothing sweary mind

BadRoly · 15/11/2012 22:33

Our lollipop man was knocked down over a year ago by a motorbike overtaking the queue if traffic. Several children were about to cross at the time. He was badly hurt and can't return. A replacement still hasn't been found despite lots of advertising Sad

"Theyre not actually allowed to "stop" the traffic as such. They either have to wait for benevolent drivers both ways or a safe gap"

Nobody told the one at our local school that.. she is a an absolute nightmare and causes untold amounts of traffic jams twice a day...

Cortana · 15/11/2012 22:36

They stick their lollipop out though. Surely no one would be expected to walk into the road and only then have the authority to stop traffic. Even when she's in the road they try to keep going Sad. Who is ever such a massive rush on a day to day basis that they'd risk someones life.

As soon as a lollipop person has stepped into the road, traffic must stop, so one foot in the road at the side is enough in law to make traffic stop. So they don't have to wait for benevolent drivers, that one foot would be enough to land a driver with a £1000 fine if they don't stop.

squeaky she isn't the one I was talking about is she? I can't believe there can be 2 quite as bad as she is. Is the school B.C.?

Why are people so manic when they're driving?

Where I work there is a primary school across the road, we have a work car park for use by only staff and patients. We have car park attendant at school run time morning and afternoon to stop parents using it as their own personal drop off point. The last attendant (older retired man) left after someone tried to run him over for the third time when he told them they couldn't park there. They just drove at him and kept going until he was forced to move!

The offender has now been removed from the list of patients now - she didn't have an appointment at the time but she was recognised by a member of staff who was nearby at the time.

MaxPepsi · 16/11/2012 12:05

And why do drivers insist on straddling the crossing when stuck in a queue of traffic????

I pass a school on my way to work and always make sure there is a gap so the lollipop lady can see (she thanks me for this too so I know it's appreciated) rather than sit in the way.

The amount of twatty drivers behind me who have beeped their horn at me!

I stay even longer when they do that to really piss them off!

FryOneFatManic · 16/11/2012 14:27

If drivers are running late, a couple of minutes waiting for people to cross a road at a crossing patrol is not going to make any difference. It really is disgusting that people don't stop.
