To hire a cleaner

I'm thinking about hiring a cleaner to deep clean my house for Christmas. I work 4 days a week (including Saturday and Sunday) every week. I want to spend my days off with dc's and I feel I'd be able to maintain the house better if it was cleaned really well. I'm getting the quote from the cleaning company tomorrow, my problem is my mum is horrified and has made me feel really lazy. She's assured me that she could have the house done in no time and I'm a fit healthy woman who could spend her money in better ways. She has valied points but I feel I have valied reasons also and I'm not being lazy. The house isn't a shit pit by the way I just find it hard to fit in deep cleaning around work and looking after dc's as does my dh. So am I being lazy and aibu or is my mum being harsh and judgemental?

I've got my house primed for a deep clean next week. My mum is coming to do all the cleaning (I pay her as that's what she does) and then having oven cleaned and carpets done on Thursday. We are away next weekend so carpets can dry.....

I dont have dcs yet but have dogs so I do this every year in preparation for Xmas.

I don't feel guilty or lazy. Go for it!

Dear The Lady,

I don't want a cleaner, nanny or chauffeur and just can't bear the idea of bumping into a liveried footman every time I pop into the orangery, but my Mum says I'm being lazy because I won't hire a complete entourage of staff. I'd rather polish my own tea service and fold my own lav paper into origami swans. AIBU?

I have a cleaner several das a week and am a SAHM. Not only does she do the cleaning, she does all the household washing and ironing, and changes the beds and towels. It's bloody brilliant. I pay her well above the going rate, because I value what she does so much. So I get to spend my time on things I'd rather do, and she gets a well-paid job. Winners all round. Oh, and my parents have a cleaner too!

Ooh, I'm so tempted by carpet cleaning.

We've had quite a lot of home improvements this year (including building work), and now it's all done, I feel like it just needs a day of dedicated cleaning, rather than the quick once over I hastily do.

Darling, get a cleaner. Cut out other things that you buy / spend money on but do not really need. Seriously, it is the best money I spend every week and the thought of going back to having to do it all myself makes me feel a bit ill.

My only caution to you is this. Once you've got a cleaner you won't want to let her go. Just saying, like.

BiteTheTopsOffIcedGems · 15/11/2012 14:04

Can you hire the cleaner and lie and say you did it all? You mum won't think you are lazy and everyone wins :)

birdofthenorth · 15/11/2012 14:05

Get a cleaner. I am trying to cut back so we can afford one too. Move any of our furniture and an inch of dust appears, and I work fewer days than you most weeks. I can't find any for less than £10/hour with a two hour minimum so saving til we can afford that for a while. Honestly, I think it will change my life, been embarrassed when people call round for far too long now! Plus you're giving somebody gainful employment. No qualms here, and I'm a raving lefty.

honeytea · 15/11/2012 14:10

If your mother isn't paying for the cleaning it is non of her business.

You are a grown woman and you can choose to spend your money and time how you like.

WorraLiberty · 15/11/2012 14:11

I have a theory Grin

It's just one poster repeatedly asking the same question so every time she name changes, everyone knows she has a cleaner.

Either that or she is a cleaner and is trying to drum up trade by making us all believe everyone has one?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/11/2012 14:15

I don't even work outside the home and I have a cleaner every week.

There is nothing virtuous in doing your own housework, IMHO.
