To think that MNers need to lower their standards

or face starvation? So far we are 'never shopping again' at Asda (bad Christmas ad), Sainsbury's (bad toy sale email), Tesco (general evilness), The Cooperative (rip off dairy farmers), Iceland (too beige) or Morrisons (no idea on this one). That leaves Waitrose, who are apparently so terrified of getting it wrong that they have produced an advert saying that they aren't doing an advert this year Hmm Aldi, Farmfoods and Lidl. It's only a matter of time before they screw up too.

AIBU to think that everyone continues to shop wherever they would shop anyway, despite the huffings and puffings of outrage on here?

I shop where I do for various reasons, none of them to do with what people on MN say. I suspect most people on here are exactly the same. Nothing wrong with a good old supermarket barny thread, but it's tongue in cheek largely.... I hope!

SugaricePlumFairy · 15/11/2012 09:17

I live in a town that has all of the supermarkets other than Netto.

Sainsburys or Asda is my shop of choice but I do Tesco every so often.

I don't get worked up or offended by negative publicity, life is too short.

FeckOffCup · 15/11/2012 09:22

My standards are already low, I'm off to asda in a minute but by most of mumsnet's standards I am probably the kind of person you would expect to see in asda Wink tattoos, primark clothes and all. I've never set foot in a waitrose but we don't really have it in Scotland.

41notTrendy · 15/11/2012 09:24

My budget dictates where I shop. And my need for certain items. I have recently switched to Aldi for a weekly shop, but top up at Sainsburys, Asda, Tesco or Waitrose as I pass by all of them at some point.
And as we rarely watch 'proper' telly I don't see adverts as we fast forward through themGrin.
I have seen the Asda and John Lewis one. The Asda one made me laugh, and I thought the John Lewis one was pants.
But that won't influence where I shop!

MorrisZapp · 15/11/2012 09:26

There's a waitrose on my street, and I'm in Scotland! (Morningside, admittedly).

Giffnock in the West has a Whole Foods Market. I was so jealous I nearly fainted.

41notTrendy · 15/11/2012 09:26

Oh I like our local co-op but thought they had a good relationship with British farmers? Bit Shock that the milk isn't fairly priced for the farmers.

Startail · 15/11/2012 09:29

The price of petrol dictates where I shop.

It's Tesco's, Sainsbury's, Morrison's or Asda dependent in which I or DH driving past.

Special trips are just not worth it, if the nearest supermarket is a 10mile round trip.

PurplePidjin · 15/11/2012 09:31

Wtf is a Booths?

Anyone got a Budgens? I used to love them, nearest now is 15 miles in an awkward place with no parking.

I wear Primark and shop in Waitrose, it's on the way home from the midwife and job centre!

FellowshipOfFestiveFellows · 15/11/2012 09:33

I don't get the Asda angst around the advert. That was not a sexist representation of our household. In fact, my experience of last Christmas was worse- at least at the end she got a glass of wine in the bosom of her happy family.

My Christmas season usually goes:
I do all the Christmas pressie buying for my dd, with dp saying he'll sort out ds (as I'm crap at boys toys)
DDs pressies bought by October.
DS pressies non-existent until mid November when I give up waiting for dp and buy the things myself.
Christmas cards are written, and then promptly lost by dd, so I do another set and find the original lot, on the ledge by the coat pegs around a week later.
Tree is put up, then knocked over/de-baubled repeatedly by dcs, until I give up trying to achieve the artful arrangement my dsil does easily and just start slinging back on what hasn't ended up clogging my vacuum.
Spend at least 4 hours of holiday period with screwdrivers unblocking various bits of vacuum.
Make a shopping list which dp writes "beer, whores and crack" on
Remind self to buy batteries and avoid epic lip trembles and tears of last year at electronic toys and no batteries
Buy lots of naice food from M&S whilst dp moans at the beef costing £25 for the Wellington.
Make Wellington the night before, using a MagiMix of serious vintage which has sparks actively coming from it whilst doing the herb crust. Wonder if I should have just bought the fucking thing in the first place.
Wrap all presents whilst dp opens the wine I bought for the starter, proceeds to drown self in it with the excuse "what? its Christmas".
Get up at 2am to find ds has sneaked downstairs and is about to open gifts (not necessarily his own). Put him back to bed.
Get up at 3am to find dd has sneaked downstairs and is about to open gifts (not necessarily her own). Put her back to bed
Get up at 5am to prep the starter and breakfast
DCs up at 6am with untold glee. Try and remove dp from bed with hangover by threatening to send the over excited dcs up to jump on him.
Make coffee and watch as artfully wrapped presents are strewn everywhere in 10 minutes flat. Wonder if its too early to open the bucks fizz.
Realise have forgotten sodding batteries. Open bucks fizz.
Serve posh breakfast, interrupted by impromptu appearance of dbil
1pm Place Wellington in oven. Feel all great that its almost done.
Much gift giving from relatives turning up, and phone calls
3pm go to check Wellington (after asking dp to at 2pm to be told its fine) to find oven has conked out and the Wellington is raw.
Dsil remarks as she leaves for other Dsils naice dinner "can't you put it in the microwave". Resist urge to cry.
Serve starter at 4.30, its lovely but I'm getting a migraine and earache
Dcs moaning they are starving.
6.30pm, Fecking, bastard, hateful Wellington is now cooked. Hate the wretched thing. Have earache and feel sick so cannot eat it either. Have taken pain killers so no booze for me.
8pm dcs in bed after bribing them with cookies
12am dp pissed as a fart, snoring in chair. I go to bed.

Did I mention that I'm doing Three Bird Roast myself this year?

Mrsjay · 15/11/2012 09:33

Mrsjay · 15/11/2012 09:35

FeckOffCup · 15/11/2012 09:38

MrsJay Grin at Scottish MN waitrose coach trip. Where's it opening then, the only one I know about in Scotland is Edinburgh which is nowhere near me.

HecatePropylaea · 15/11/2012 09:39

I hope none of you shop anywhere this christmas.

Stay at home.

This way I can get round the shops and not be more intimately acquainted with the people in the queues than I am with my husband...

honestly. If folks got any closer, we'd need lube...

Mrsjay · 15/11/2012 09:41

at Scottish MN waitrose coach trip. Where's it opening then,

Stirling 3rd of january my spies tell me, I think there is waitrose in glasgow my cousin pops in to get his weekly shop

WeatherWitch · 15/11/2012 09:50

Nobody's mentioned Fortnum & Mason or Harvey Nicks food hall yet...

frasersmummy · 15/11/2012 09:51

Apparently Scotland boasts 4 waitrose stores.. I didnt think we had any

There are 2 in Edinburgh -one of which is morning side .. I think you would need your lippy on to shop there

And there are 2 in Glasgow - Byres road and Netwon mearns

FeckOffCup · 15/11/2012 09:51

Ah am in Stirling occasionally so could pop in and see what all the fuss is about if I'm there. Not close enough to any of those towns to make it a regular thing though.

Pagwatch · 15/11/2012 09:53

Harrods food hall is lovely. So is selfridges although the till system is shocking.

I spend ages wondering around there then just come way with a big box of chocolates. Every time.

We are about to get a Waitrose a two minute walk from my house. I will never be able to get out of my drive again when the traffic for that fucking thing starts up.

Mrsjay · 15/11/2012 09:56

feckoffcup i wil let you know when my bus trip is Grin yes my cousin lives on byres road probably his corner shop tbh ,

Mrsjay · 15/11/2012 09:57

I think you would need your lippy on to shop there

You would need to plan the outfit sounds stressful

Mrsjay · 15/11/2012 09:58

I was on Harrods website last christmas not going to buy I had read something on here about a hamper and went for a nosy,

noisytoys · 15/11/2012 10:07

I shop in lidl because its the closest shop to my house. I thought everyone just shopped where was convenient

MorrisZapp · 15/11/2012 10:08

Don't worry about the waitrose outfit, all you need is a coat. I keep a score.

Last night it was Berghaus 5, North Face 7.

PetiteRaleuse · 15/11/2012 10:09

Purplepidgin Booths is a brilliant northern supermarket chain. Focuses on local suppliers and good quality. More expensive than Asda for example but comparable to Sainsburys. Really good for meat and cheese in particular.
