Hate it when people announce that they are having a 'cull' on Facebook

Sounds totally self obsessed, like they want you to beg for their friendship. If your going to do it, do it quietly fgs!

No, I don't think FB is shit or sad. It just depends how you use it.

I live a few hundred miles away from family and friends so use it as it's handy to share pics of my kids with my family, my kids scout group has a closed group, as does school, etc

I've only got about 50 people on my friends list, mainly close friends and family.

ZebraOwl · 14/11/2012 10:59

I think the bigger issue is the unnecessary distress their attention-seeking nonsense causes badgers: "cull" is not a term to be used lightly...

OldMumsy · 14/11/2012 11:00

zebra LOL!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/11/2012 11:00

Yes, there could be some sensitive badgers on their Facebook Grin

goralka · 14/11/2012 11:01

yes the term 'cull' could be badgerist, certainly

WorraLiberty · 14/11/2012 11:01

Won't SOMEONE think of the Badgers! Grin

Kalisi · 14/11/2012 11:02

Arghh! One of my pet peeves that one.

trixie123 · 14/11/2012 11:06

goralka actually I disagree. One of my FB friends for instance, was a good friend at school 20 years ago but lives took us in opposite directions. We reconnected on FB and have met up once or twice. She lives a long way away and its not practical to meet often but we both got remarried recently, have kids the same age and I foresee a time when kids are older that we might be able to meet more. In the meantime, we can see photos, updates etc as we like. If you don't like FB, don't use it.

Purple2012 · 14/11/2012 11:11

I don't think it's shot or sad, but some people who use it are. I hate all the status updates about inane crap. There are people on FB that I hardly see, because they live the other end of the country however they are important to me and I like to see their photos etc. Just because I don't see them often it doesn't mean I can't keep in touch that way.

The people I deleted were work 'friends' that I barely speak to in real life and old school friends that I have not bothered to arrange to meet up with.

I think some people think the more friends they have the more popular they are.

Now I don't have many people on I get to see things that I am bothered about not crap about someone eating a bar of chocolate or having a bath!

TheOnlyPersonInTheRoom · 14/11/2012 11:13

I want to do the opposite - I want to delete myself from Facebook but I'm too worried that people will think I've just defriended them and get all offended about it.

So I am putting it off.

But back to the OP, yes it's that kind of thing that makes me want to delete myself - I get The Rage every time I see it. Part of me suspects they don't actually delete anyone, they just want to see who will beg not to be defriended.

goralka · 14/11/2012 11:15

If you don't like FB, don't use it - I don't - I have better things to do like see people in real life and spend all morning on MN...Grin

puds11 · 14/11/2012 11:15

No pudd cull of Facebook friends

OP posts:
NicholasTeakozy · 14/11/2012 11:21

Or the "Click like on this status if you want to stay on my friend list"

I hate this. I usually reply with "oh do fuck off" and wait for deletion. :)

BegoniaBigtoes · 14/11/2012 11:26

I deleted my old account because I couldn't stand the whole thing and I didn't dare to delete people in case they noticed, plus the only friends I had were the ones who approached me, because I couldn't bear to ask anyone to be my friend, it seems such an awful clingy thing to do. So they were all people like old schoolmates I hardly know saying things like "Let's have a reunion!!!" Aaarrggh.

numbum · 14/11/2012 11:30

I deleted someone recently who had 'If you can see this status you've made it through my cull'. I also deleted all those mutual friends who replied to said status with 'thanks for keeping me x' type things. Urgh

Fakebook · 14/11/2012 11:33

I hate Facebook. Really hate it. I'm deactivating it as soon as I can be bothered to log into it.

ZebraOwl · 14/11/2012 11:42

No-one EVER thinks of the badgers in this kind of situation. It is a sad reflection of the state of our society that rampant badgerism can go unchecked. I think an awareness campaign about it is definitely called for. That or just responding to cull nonsense with accusations of badgerism & defriending on those grounds...

marchwillsoonbehere · 14/11/2012 11:51

I speak as a reluctant convert to Facebook and largely think it's as good or as bad as you want it to be. I have recently had some great times and meet ups as a result with more on the way.

Some people who use it though are too immature and up themselves to do so and people who post about a 'cull' clearly fall into that category and should be barred!

Glitterknickaz · 14/11/2012 12:03

I particularly enjoyed the reverse one I did when I announced any bigoted pieces of shit should unfriend me....

(after an attack about my kids I might add)

honeytea · 14/11/2012 13:27

A woman I know vaguely had the status "like this status if we are real friends, everyone else I will delete". 3 people liked her status including her dd and dh. Needless to say she was still on my newsfeed with her odd updates the next day. Im to chicken to delete anyone, I worry I will bump into them in the shop and they will ask me why I deleted them.

BrownTrousers · 14/11/2012 13:52

Good lord is that how FB operates?Hmm I just can't bring myself to get involved with it. That sounds like something dd's catty teen friends would do.

maddening · 14/11/2012 15:10

I have a "friend" on facebook who is actually a friend of a friend. He announced that he was doing a fb friend cull so if you were still his friend the next day he must really like you - despite not really knowing him I was not culled Confused
