To leave my 7 year old to entertain my 3 month old while i have a shower?

DD is responsible, sensible and totally adores her little brother. This evening I had a shower, leaving the door open and asked her to keep an eye on him for 10-15 minutes and call me if she needed me. The phone rung while I was in shower and it was my friend. i called her back and said I'd been in the shower and she asked who was looking after DS. When I said it was DD she launched into a long lecture about how I'd put DS in danger and put too much responsibility on DD.

Now worrying whether she's right. DS didn't move from his baby gym for the whole time and DD sat next to him singing and playing with the toys.

So mumset jury was I being unreasonable?

Yup, I've done it with my daughters.

Sneepy · 13/11/2012 20:49

I'm 7yrs older than my brother & 'looking after' him was always my job until I left home!

I knew there was a reason for big age gaps!

MrsRhettButler · 13/11/2012 21:13

This is why I have a 6year age gap Grin

Tell friend to MHOB!

So sorry but your friend is an idiot. If you have spent a lot of time with him/her you may need to get yourself tested.

;)

No way! Your friend is being unrealistic, there are times in the day where certain quick jobs like showering just need to get done.
By your friend's standards, all single mums sure would reek. Wink

Fairylea · 13/11/2012 21:32

I do this. Dd is 9 and ds is 5 months. Otherwise we'd be late for school run everyday !!

CecilyP · 13/11/2012 22:12

What does your friend expect mums of 3 month old babies to do - never shower, or hire a babysitter for when they do. Babies can be left for the time it takes and that fact that yours has a loving sister to entertain him is an added bonus.

I leave my 4 month old in the baby gym or asleep in his cot whilst I shower for 5 mins. What is going to happen ?

LibrarianByDay · 13/11/2012 22:38

YANBU.

I used to leave mine together in DDs room, behind the stairgate, when I had a shower in the mornings and DH was at work.

What does your friend think single parents do - never wash?

giraffesCantLightFireworks · 13/11/2012 22:41

YABU how dare you shower you selfish cow. Wink

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 13/11/2012 22:45

yabu. Leave the three.month old on their own. no need for anyone to mind them, as long as they are put somewhere safe Grin

Your friend is a plonker.

VIX1980 · 13/11/2012 22:45

Baby tv is my childminder whilst i have a shower Wink what else are you meant to do?

FizzyLaces · 13/11/2012 22:49

Your friend is a total numpty. Ignore! I imagine your friend would also be disparaging if you were smelly. Smile

SouthernShepherdess · 13/11/2012 22:53

Your friend sounds crackers..a total fruit loop! Sod having her as a friend. I would seriously consider reviewing your friendship with her.

ThePlEWhoLovedMe · 13/11/2012 23:22

This is why I have a 13 year age gap.

Surely the lovely thing about 3 months old is that they don't need any looking after while you shower because once you've put them in a safe place they can't get anywhere? But still very lovely to let the 7yo do some caring; a good relationship between them will give them both happiness long after you are gone.

Does your friend expect you never to sleep and never to go for a dump?
