AIBU to be a bit annoyed by the both the Morrisons and Asda xmas ads?

to me, the message of these ads appear to be that Mum is expected to do everything. Now, I am a relatively new, full time working mum - and this is exactly how it is panning out in my home. I do the vast majority of housework etc. as well as a full time job and anticipate in the run up to christmas this will be no different (as I am sure is the same for many mums).

However, when I saw these ads, particularly the Asda one, I was quite irate. It is somehow confirming that we should be happy and accepting of this situation. Especially at the end, after all the hard work, the mums are so smiley and accepting. Sorry - but if DH asks 'what are we having for tea?' the first instant i get to sit down on xmas day, he will get left over turkey over his head instead of a whimsicle smile.

yet the JL ones have christmas as a magical happy time with snowmen and family and twee music, there doesn't seem to be a happy medium

Have Sains and tesco done theirs yet?

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/11/2012 10:46

YABU - it's just an advert. Though at the end of the Asda one, when the husband asks what's for dinner, I did think "I'd be telling him to fuck off".

The Tesco one makes me smile. Is rather charming. I never think anything Tesco do is charming! I'm sure they're going to ruin it by having 50 short ones though. Because they're only advertising champagne in the one running now and they're not going to miss out advertising everything else.

Haven't seen the Morrisons one. There was once a fights over a turkey in the one I worked in though. Two women playing v angry tug of war/wrestling for a turkey.

I hate the John Lewis one, inanimate objects moving when they're not meant to freaks me out. Struggled with Toy Story a bit as a child. I am a weirdo

I saw the ASDA one last night and by the end of it was yelling at the TV.

YANBU.

YABU its an advert - get sky+ or ignore it!

sue52 · 14/11/2012 11:02

They're both a bit 1950s housewife. Strange how both companies have come up with such similar dated stereotypes.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/11/2012 11:08

Maybe they're going on statistics from studies that state that the majority of women still do all that kind of stuff? Or the statistics from recent studies that state that younger women are choosing to stay at home and do that kind of stuff?

MrsGeologist · 14/11/2012 11:13

The Morrisons one is so fucjibg miserable, I nearly wept.

MrsLHofstadter · 14/11/2012 11:16

If you don't like it, don't watch it.

Can we have a Sky+ to replace Biscuit in situations like these?

squoosh · 14/11/2012 11:17

If you don't like it, don't watch it.

If you don't like threads discussing the ads then don't read them.

YABU they are great. And they have got us all talking about them so they have done their job. Some of us SAHM love doing everything. Believe it or not.

mum2threesons · 14/11/2012 12:33

I like both of them...they are only adverts after all.

squoosh · 14/11/2012 12:43

And they have got us all talking about them so they have done their job.

I'm pretty sure the point of ads is to get people to shop not to talk. Well I'm boycotting Morrisons, where I'd usually shop, so the ad hasn't worked for me.

Cluffyfunt · 14/11/2012 12:48

The Asia one gives me the rage!
I've not noticed the morisons one yet

squoosh · 14/11/2012 12:53

For the Morrison's ad picture This is England meets the Oxo Family meets Girl Interrupted.

sincitylover · 05/12/2012 12:31

Tesco and Sainsburys seem to be going for the austerity message.

The Morrisons one is seriously depressing - it's not how I want my Christmas to be - single parent so will probably do it all anyway.

Asda also shit.

others going too far the other way depiciting a sickly sweet happy perfect family type of scenario.

My fav is the John Lewis snowman ad where he goes and buys the snowwoman the present.

All Christmas is really is a load of old commercial hype!

Bah humbug

laptopdancer · 05/12/2012 12:33

My DH watched the ad an turned to me and said "thats why I always take you away at Xmas. It's crap for the mums"
