to think many otherwise socially responsible people think nothing of chucking a cigarette butt on the pavement?

I don't smoke. I don't care if other people do, that's up to them. Recently I've realised that loads of my friends who do smoke think nothing of chucking a fag butt out of a car window or throwing it in a bush. You would never catch them throwing a crisp packet on the ground so how come it's ok to chuck cigarette butts around?

These people aren't scum of the earth, they're nice people who work in education and for charities and all sorts of other caring professions. Most of them even recycle!
Has anyone else noticed this? AIBU to be annoyed? What should I say next time I see this?

Why don't smokers carry around those portable,closed ashtrays? Then they can bin them when they're at home?

Sorry Boomerwang, yes it was a portable ashtray that fits inside the packet - holds 3 butts - from www.ashcan.co.uk They used to sell them in Tesco, I don't know if they still do. Cost me less than 2 quid IIRC

YANBU and I'm a smoker who doesn't smoke in front of my kid so yes it's put out in the street on the way back from work - it's put out - I'm shit scared of fires and I wouldn't anyone or a pet to tread on it. In fact - I usually put it out, pick it up and put it in of the many public bins we have in the city. I'm same with any other rubbish but not many are (given the state of our streets - and that's non smokers too).

Cannot imagine anyone would throw their fag butt out of the car (thought it was illegal to smoke in a car, no?).
