... is not bad luck Confused.

Got a toy cupboard from Freecycle and am now going to pick up a blanket box to redecorate for the babies room.

DH wants me to not get the blanket box as it could bring bad heebiejeebies into the house.

Well AIBU to go get it as he's clearly wrong?

Not just wrong, he's barking mad!

squeakytoy · 12/11/2012 10:14

He is being ridiculous. How does he feel about antique furniture?

snickers251 · 12/11/2012 10:15

Loves a good freebie!

Upcycling is very in at the moment too!

fuzzpig · 12/11/2012 10:16

Weird.

Older stuff is often better quality - after all it's lasted long enough to become second hand!

I paid £70ish for an ikea bookcase which is now falling apart (TBF a lot of ikea stuff is actually brilliant) and £40ish for an old massive floor to ceiling unit thing from British Heart Foundation which has lasted brilliantly and looks gorgeous.

mum2threesons · 12/11/2012 10:17

I think its a great idea to get 2nd hand bits and bobs.
I got a two seater sofa and 2 armchairs for my conservatory for £30..bargain Smile

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 12/11/2012 10:17

Hard furniture is fine. Second hand soft furnishings give me the heebie jeebies too.

fuzzpig · 12/11/2012 10:18

That said, I do love the episode of Big Bang Theory where Penny gets an old chair and it has something living in it :o

AlwaysHoldingOnToStarbug · 12/11/2012 10:18

Bonkers!!

When we first moved in together we couldn't afford a 3 piece suite so we got a second hand one for £30. It lasted us 6 years, do definitely not bad luck for us!

PeazlyPops · 12/11/2012 10:19

Talk to him about it! I'd be livid if I didn't want something in the house and my husband bought it anyway, so I offer the same courtesy to him.

AlwaysHoldingOnToStarbug · 12/11/2012 10:19

fuzzpig I watched that one the other day, hilarious! Grin

ImperialStateKnickers · 12/11/2012 10:20

I don't think we've got any new furniture, ever.

DP is an antique dealer.

Bearandcub · 12/11/2012 10:20

Rubbish. Secondhand furniture is great.

Mind you, if he's so sure - tell him to "exorcise it" be putting in the middle of salt circle in the garden at midnight obv. in costume and with chanting. Then film him.

Softlysoftly · 12/11/2012 10:21

It's Lloyd loom type apparently so should be way better than buying a cheap new one and I like the idea of decorating it to suit.

It does have a fabric top I think but I'm going to reupholster anyway as soon as I YouTube how

steppemum · 12/11/2012 10:24

love second hand stuff, our whole house is full of it, cheap stuff to tide us over and also good stuff that we couldn't afford to buy new.
Lots of it is admittedly from family, but I am an avid user of ebay and freecycle.

Tell him that the new paint wipes away the heebyjeebies!!!

Softlysoftly · 12/11/2012 10:24

Bear Grin

Imperial interesting, how's your luck?

Peazly fine I'll be an adult about it

ChaoticismyLife · 12/11/2012 10:27

Oh, go on, tell him what Bear said Grin

honeytea · 12/11/2012 10:33

We had second hand 3 piece suit when I was younger, there was a big sofa and 2 chairs, an old lady had died on the sofa so me and my brother refused to sit on it, for years we'd only sit on the chairs even going as far to sharing a chair if we had guests.

My dp thinks it is wrong to buy second hand baby clothes incase there are ghosts attached to them. I ignore him.

WaitingForMe · 12/11/2012 11:52

Do you only live in brand new houses? Because there's surely very little difference and the vast majority of us have 2nd hand homes!

Trills · 12/11/2012 11:54

PLease ask him exactly what badness will be caused by old furniture and post the answers here.

MulledWineOnTheBusLady · 12/11/2012 12:03

Yet he was ok with the toy cupboard? I wouldn't buy anything upholstered secondhand either, but that is to do with screaming ab-dabs, not heebie-jeebies. Wink

RillaBlythe · 12/11/2012 12:07

Is it that the baby isn't here yet? I feel twitchy about getting ready for a baby before it is born. But I love second hand furniture.

flyoverthegoldenhill · 12/11/2012 12:26

Do what Bear said - I'm waiting fot the video Grin

ivanapoo · 12/11/2012 12:33

What a weirdo! Apart from our beds and one chair none of our pieces of furniture is new... YANBU but maybe check why exactly he doesn't want the blanket box. Maybe he doesn't like it and is using the heebie jeebies as an excuse.

I bought a loyd loom box by the way, spray painted the wicker and reupholstered the top - it looks good!

IvanaHumpalotCountDracula · 12/11/2012 12:42

Get yourself to the library and find some simple how to restoration books - the 2nd hand furniture world will be your oyster. Just check for active worm!

socharlotte · 12/11/2012 12:44

Only bad luck for furniture retailers!
