AIBU?

Is wearing a headscarf somehow insulting to muslims?

Sorry if this comes out wrong.

Quite often in extremes of weather (both hot and cold) I feel more comfortable with my head covered. In fact, I have been known to do it in private anyway. I suppose it is to o with me being a bit weird with sensory stuff and it making me feel secure, but I also think it looks nice (I have some lovely scarves, but I suppose I do tend to buy them in quite asian areas). I also cover my hair when baking and just leave it on. Sometimes it is a hippy style, sometimes it is wrapped round my neck abd covering my hair completely, sometimes just kind of loosely draped on my head and shoulders.

I also quite often wear long flowing dark clothes, mostly because I find them more practical - nobody wants to see random bits of my flesh poking out when I bend over to help the kids.

A couple of people have said I sometimes look Islamic, or like some kind of russian peasant or Amish. Some people have assumed it is some kind of political statement to look traditional Russian.

I honestly don't do this on purpose - sometimes I wear miniskirts and doc martens.

I'm just a bit worried that this is a kind of 'badge' of Islam for many people, and I would hate to offend anyone.

AIBU?

Well that'll be the Irish travellers for you worldcitizen...when you think of how dark haired the Corrs are for example.

Ooo I know what you mean about the old lady accessories... I've still got my not Cath Kidston but looks just like it pinnie on, and ddtwins refuse to go to the shops with me because I have 'the pink trolley of granniness'. Don't care, I'm buggered if I'm carting six pints of milk a case a couple of bottles of wine and all the catfood in carriers cutting my hands to shreds!

The Corrs, They are beautiful, too. . I've seen some gorgeous people in Ireland, I couldn't stop staring at as their faces looked like those of Roman or Greek statues, like carved by an artist, soooo beautiful.
It also seems to me to have the highest rate of the black hair and blue eye combination.

no its not offensive at all. possibly yes people might come up and say salam alaykum to you depending on what your area is like, if its a friendly area and they think you are a new convert or a muslim new to the area or something then yeh they would but just explain your not muslim but they will probs just say oh sorry for the misunderstanding and that will be that. cant think of any muslim i know who would be offended by it so wouldnt worry

Least you had it! I tried black eyeliner once to look mysterious (I blame Peter Andre), still got "Yorkshire, no she's definitely Yorkshire, just look at the corned beef legs and faint aroma of cows arse". Angry

Made sure I got upduffed by someone swarthy though so I can live vicariously through the DDs and be that kind of mother Grin

Softly!! Grin

Since you've revealed all about your corned beef legs and faint aroma of cows arse, I'm going to have to assume you're related to me and mine.

I'm sorry, I don't know what's worse? Grin

It's possible Worra it's a small community.

I had to travel quite far to dilute the gene pool after that incident - at the wedding - with the new boytoy - and the call for family only photo - when I found him in the same line up....

Arrgghhhhh Shock

OP I kind of see what you're getting at as I used to wear headscarves in a similarly old-lady style, but it was always Europeans who thought I was Muslim, not Muslims! No one was offended either way.
I had a few dickish comments from colleagues asking if I'd converted recently, but these were from the same charming folks who use to talk to my chest. Hmm
Just wear what you like and smile!

I wear them in the actual way that many muslim women do, held on m head by folding on my forehead so it is tight, then over my ears, and wrapped around my neck. All my hair is covered so it looks nothing like the queen. Then my clothes are things like a floor length black skirt with a loose black long sleeved plain top. Or the same in ver dark colours.

Anyway, so IABU but either reasonable or utterly racist and insulting to even ask. Sigh.

I don't think you are being racist, in fact I think you are just being far too careful not to be racist. Just a bit daft really.

my good moms friend wears a headscarf. she is very very christian. (also weird, but thats just her) people get offended by her, but not because of her headscarf.
op, wear what you want and like

if i told you what i wear, i'd out myself. but i have had Muslims say 'why's she wearing our clothes?' (i'm not, they're mine) and people thinking i'm a nun. some Christians cover, too (search 'Christian veil' - very fetching) and Jewish women wear wigs, snoods or scarves. wear what you wear and don't worry. Muslims are a broad range of people like the rest of humanity and most of them will cope.
