I'm wondering AIBU, I'm sat her pretty peed off. DH and I arranged to put our dogs with a friend and we bought a small selection of fireworks for the back garden, these were low noise tame ones DS are 8 & 5. It was supposed to be a surprise!!

So the boys come out and are scared to death of the fireworks, and started to tell us the school have been talking all day about the danger, they have shown my DS 8 pictures of people with burnt faces, he described the eyelids all burnt, people with burnt tummys and one picture of someone missing a leg.

Don't get me started on sparklers, Oh no mum we are not allowed them, look my coat has big sleeves, our gloves aren't the correct type.

Sod this over protective nonsense, there is safety then there is scaring kids stupid and wrecking something that should be fun.

Opinions??

If a supermarket is selling large and expensive fireworks to shoppers they are breaking the law.

SchrodingersUndeadMew · 05/11/2012 20:00

Ninah, me too. I freak out at the displays and like that I know what is being set off and that we can stop if it's freaking me out.

Plus, I can just run in the backdoor and watch from behind the window. :o

Rachel130690 · 05/11/2012 20:00

horsebiscuit I'm from Northern Ireland and here you have to have a license to let fireworks off. I think it's a good idea but it doesn't stop people buying them illegally.

Playroom it must be horrible for your Dh to work tonight. I hope he is okay throughout the night. Sounds horrible when you have idiotic people at such behaviour. When you here of things like this it makes you think how stupid are some people.

Sugarice · 05/11/2012 20:01

ski not sky!

ninah · 05/11/2012 20:01

and no drunks ...
I can't run in because I am the setter offer

ninah · 05/11/2012 20:02

oh and the bedroom window thing, shrodinger - wtf?! terrifying

SchrodingersUndeadMew · 05/11/2012 20:02

Very true about no drunks!

I couldn't set them off, too much of a scaredy. I make DP do it and have just found out he can actually run! Shock :o

fluffyraggies · 05/11/2012 20:03

So many people are saying 'but they're safe if you're careful', 'but they're safe if an adult is around'.

How many injuries are sustained every year even though care was being taken and/or adults were around? Loads i bet!

I think in the future over-the-counter purchasing of fireworks will be banned and future generations will listen incredulously to us telling them that it was quite normal to let them off in our back-gardens in our day, even though we knew every year there were terrible injuries, 'because it was fun and we all thought it wouldn't happen to us'.

SchrodingersUndeadMew · 05/11/2012 20:03

Yeah, they are complete idiots, there's loads of kids and animals in this area but they honestly don't care.

MustTidyPlayroom · 05/11/2012 20:04

They only stopped when the police arrived and then ran off before they could get caught.

DH expects they will have to go out to them again tonight. The thing is he works in a fairly nice area, but bonfire night seems to bring out the idiots.

ninah · 05/11/2012 20:05

lol
I am healthily aware quite scared too

SchrodingersUndeadMew · 05/11/2012 20:06

You're far braver than I.

Our back garden is massive and I still act like a wimp at the other end of it!

goingupinsmoke · 05/11/2012 20:06

Playroom at least I know my DS won't be one of the throwing fireworks types as another poster mentioned at least he will be so scared of them he may well be the voice of reason.

Hope your DH stays safe tonight.

where does class (naiceness) come into it? Confused

stinkinseamonkey · 05/11/2012 20:08

I am totally against back garden amateur fireworks myself, TWICE I have seen people have very lucky escapes. I would never take my DCs to a back garden fireworks thing (or have one myself) and would be happy that they were aware of the dangers incase friends had some.

YABU take em to organised events, the should be banned for private use! maybe you should ask to see some of the information your children have been shown to inform yourself before next year!

ninah · 05/11/2012 20:08

idiots are idiots

ninah · 05/11/2012 20:09

Skiiing's quite risky ...Wink

stinkinseamonkey · 05/11/2012 20:09

and BTW in the past where I have seen very near misses at garden fireworks, everyone was careful and sober. People were injured getting out of the way but not burnt thank god, another one the fireworks turned itself on its side once lit (it was placed carefully according to instructions) and nearly went through a window of the house.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 05/11/2012 20:10

I think the school is right to warn

But i think it is possible to have safe and fun home displays.

ethelb · 05/11/2012 20:12

I a going to go against the grain here and yanbu. They wouldn't show children such graphic sex, so why such graphic gore?

However, I had friends who got quite badly burned with people being arseholes with fireworks so kids do need to be warned.

Sirzy · 05/11/2012 20:13

Would the graphic sex photos serve a purpose for 8 year olds? Because "graphic gore" certainly does have a purpose in this case.

ethelb · 05/11/2012 20:14

but why is violence ok and not sex? The point is that it isn't a very age appropriate way to educate children imo.

Sirzy · 05/11/2012 20:16

Its not violence. It is an injury caused by fireworks being shown to demonstrate the damage fireworks can cause. Why is that not appropriate?

Do you have a better way of making children understand the risks?

stinkinseamonkey · 05/11/2012 20:18

well there is a good way to have sex, sex is and should be a good nice thing, it's healthy to have a "normal" age appropriate sex life so it is important to not build negative associations with ALL sex, just with the wrong kind of sex

whereas IMO noone needs to be setting off amateur fireworks in their garden and the whole thing should be banned

I don't think sex should be banned

so obviously I would support totally different teaching styles around the two subjects
