To expect people to keep their bloody dogs in tonight?

It sounds like a mini war zone around our house and the amount of dogs I can hear going crazy outside is ridiculous. AIBU to think dog owners should bring the poor little buggers in from the garden tonight or am I being precious?

Not in the UK so not an issue right now but my dog, who is scared of bins and the hoover, loves fireworks at new year's and in July. But yanbu, dogs should be kept in or under close supervision if they are frightened.

One of mine isn't scared of fireworks but gets very angry with them and barks and barks, whining at the back door to go running after them!
Another is asleep on the sofa and the last one is shaking in her bed in the corner. They are all different and react differently to what is a strange and potentially very scary time.
It's the fireworks that are the problem not the "bloody dogs" as you kindly call them!!

Marymoo73 · 03/11/2012 20:22

Totally agree, have the next 8 weeks of "random" fireworks to look forward to. one of mine has been barking hysterically every night since the fireworks started about oooh 5 days ago?! Kids threw bangers at us when we were walking about 3 years ago and since then he's been totally freaked. He's in the lounge with me and the other moog (totally unresponsive) rescue rememdy not working and he is beside himself. So no, he wont be out barking at the fireworks, he'll be inside, barking and bricking himself.

toomuch2young · 03/11/2012 20:27

It's heartbreaking having them so scared isn't it marymoo. Barky one makes scared shaky one worse and none of us get a moments peace. They've all had a dose of kalmaid tonight and this morning and its not made the slightest difference!!

My dog hates them & shows this by barking. I got her a thundershirt which seems to be working. I try to let her out to wee when the fireworks have stopped but you can pretty much guarantee they'll start again once she's out.
Lovely - not all dog owners let their dogs poop on the pavement & I always pick it up!

My parents dogs live out the garden, they have a 6 foot shed with a fence around the outside which is 10 foot, the shed is well insulated and they have loads if blankets and hay. They go in and out when they please.

They don't bark though at night

I think there are a lot of organised displays tonight because the 5th falls on a Monday?

YANBU OP. my mother's neighbours leave their 3 dogs outside regardless of any event. So I imagine the poor things will be out for the duration of firework season, which now started usually carries on in fits and starts until New Year. They were left outside in the snow we had a couple of years back and the RSPCA wouldn't do anything about it.

My puppy is utterly oblivious to the noise going on outside this evening mind.

crashdoll · 03/11/2012 20:40

My DDog is unconscious on the sofa, seemingly unbothered by what sounds like World War 3 in my street. However, the dog 2 doors down is not happy and letting the whole neighbourhood know about it. He sets my dog off barking in the garden but what can you do? I need to let the dog out to pee.

LST · 03/11/2012 20:43

YABU op on the basis that not all dogs hate fireworks. I'm taking mine dog out for a walk in a min and he couldn't care less.

But if the dogs are distressed YANBU. My old staffy was petrified of fireworks and he never went out if it was dark.

LST · 03/11/2012 20:45

But I am really worried about my old lady cat Sad I don't know where she is. She hasn't been out for days and I opened the door to go to the bin and she shot out and hasn't returned. She hates fireworks. God knows why she thought outside would be the best place for her SadSad

My puppy is terrified. His wee heart is pounding and he doesn't know where to hide--but he is not uttering a sound but big brown eyes keep looking at me begging me to make it stop.

crashdoll · 03/11/2012 20:49

I think my dog might be stupid. He hides under the table if you get a dustpan and brush out but is chilled as anything during our neighbourhood's version of WW3.
