To ask if this is naff?

LIGHTHEARTED

Just about to go out sofa shopping, planning to get two matching, but DH pipes up that this is naff...I had no idea...is it? DH is terribly posh and I grew up in usual working class setting so I bow down to his knowledge of these things, obviously Hmm

So tell me, dear mnetters, is this true? And while you are at it you better warn me about other things that are unexpectedly naff that I might not have been aware of, given my humble upbringing. I thank you.

I LOVE eclectic furniture. But to make it look good takes a good eye or a large wallet.

The best mis matched furniture works well together, so you can't just pick a green sofa and a yellow one and expect it to look good automatically.

Your DH may well have taste, is he prepared or can he offer the funds to match?

We have matching sofas because we were on a budget, brown goes with everything and you got a third off if you bought two. Meh.

It's not naff, it's practical and easily affordable.

What is a naff rug? Mine is real wool, dark brown with a few small teal circles. Argos!

whois · 03/11/2012 15:04

We ave in matching sofas because we bought the cheapest comfey one from ikea and it is white. The landlords existing sofa was brown.

In my own house I had matching 2 and 3 seated and I think that looked much better!

Common is my having a matching sofa.

Common is have a 'room theme' and having some shit generic picture on the wall, a cheapie coloured case and pot poured dish to match your ads and scatter cushions.

*vase not case

If you live in a stately home then I guess mismatched sofas in a dusty old room would look great.

However, I love our two matching sofas in our tiny living room. We have a feature wall and a collage photo on the wall Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 03/11/2012 15:05

Mine is real wool too, sole. Wink

But how'd you get it teal? Shock

Mrsjay · 03/11/2012 15:16

what you obviously need to do is go out buy the tattiest mismatched sofas to please your husband and if it is OLD BROWN leather then of course you would be a better person Grin Mine match I don't care I couldnt be arsed to pick 2 different sofas It took me long enough to find ones i liked

freddiefrog · 03/11/2012 15:19

I don't have a feature wall, but I do have mismatched sofas.

Not deliberate though, we had a 2 and a 3 seater sofa, the 3 seater collapsed and we couldn't find one to match exactly, and couldn't afford to replace both so went with co-ordinating, rather than trying to match and it not being quite right

Mrsjay · 03/11/2012 15:23

My dh likes things to match come to think of it so does DD1 I am not sure they could cope with mismatched seats I think they would explode Grin

Fairylea · 03/11/2012 15:26

We have mismatched sofas because my mum gave us one and we brought another from eBay. One is brown leather, one is brown fabric. I had no idea I was so damn cool :)

Trills · 03/11/2012 15:37

Are you being unreasonable to ask?

The world would be a very difficult place to live in if just asking was unreasonable.

Trills · 03/11/2012 15:38

You are clearly the sort of person who has to buy their own furniture, so it'snot as if you are going to have great-aunt Ethel's old Chesterfield sofa.

BloodRedAlienReflux · 03/11/2012 15:41

Backs out of fuck boring thread.....

maddening · 03/11/2012 16:16

Have you any factory outlets near you? We have one that makes for m&s, Laura Ashley etc and you can get some fab sofas for a lot less. If you get a couple of mismatching sofas then places like these are great.

We got a m&s large 2 seater in brown leather and a different m&s large 2 seater sofa in a mushroom suede which tones really nicely with the brown. It worked out £350 for both but in the shop they would have come nearer to £1500!
