Would you put on nail varnish whilst on a flight?

Woman did today on the 4 hr flight I was on, and it absolutely stank! I could feel my asthma coming on. DH who was on the other side of the plane said it was really bad from where he was sitting too.

Maybe it's just me .... Although I have never noticed anyone ever doing this before.

Nail varnish to my knowledge is flammable. So shouldn't be on a flight. Apart from the annoying other passengers.

Just saying.

Bestof7 · 03/11/2012 01:41

...no setting airplane alight...

ImperialFireworksInMyKnickers · 03/11/2012 01:47

In the last year or two I've developed an intolerance (to put it mildly) to aerosol type stuff. Those deo-odorant sprays in the loos in Tesco, local Leisure Centre, Pizza Italiana etc... YANBU OP, Smelly Chemical Merchants if there's a pong have you considered opening the window?

Nandocushion · 03/11/2012 01:51

I have been on a plane when a woman redoing her manicure was asked to stop by the flight attendants. It's seriously stinky and YANBU.

aldiwhore · 03/11/2012 01:52

moonlightandbonfires well said. Erm, not sure whether that makes the OP reasonable or not, or whether I am outrageously U, but yes, I concur. Wine

Some women were doing this on the tram a few months ago. Being pregnant with a heightened sense of smell, I could barely breathe. I can't imagine what it would be like on a plane!

A few years ago I was filing my nails on a train and a woman on the other side of the carriage asked me to stop because she couldn't stand the noise. On a train! I thought she was mad, but I stopped.

OrangeLily · 03/11/2012 08:14

This annoys me so much! People doing it in trains too... Who do they think they are?!

BerylStreep · 03/11/2012 08:16

I was too much of a wuss to ask her to stop though, but I was starting to panic as I realised I had left my inhaler in my case.

True about feet Grin I would have dearly liked to take my shoes off, but I wouldn't have subjected anyone to them.

How thoughtless. Hate flying, being cooped up in close confinement with strangers and their idea of what is acceptable. Similar to going to the cinema and sitting by someone who eats those vile cheesey nacho things. Angry

Bunbaker · 03/11/2012 08:33

"I think its fine, I've done it quite often when I fly long haul. But I tend to use that as an opportunity to do almost an entire spa session. I've seen other people doing it and I've never noticed a smell. I think some particular products may smell very strongly but most don't. Lots of people are over sensitive."

I think you must have a seriously impaired sense of smell. Being able to smell nail varnish is not being over sensitive, and a lot of strong chemical smells do trigger off breathing problems in some people. Nail varnish is far too stinky to apply in an enclosed space like an aeroplane.

I have always fancied taking egg sandwiches on planes but never been brave enough. Cheese and pickle last time.

TwatasaurusRex · 03/11/2012 08:41

I did recently eat an egg sandwich on a train Blush I felt terrible, but I had bought it actually on the train...

susiedaisy · 03/11/2012 08:46

As a migraine sufferer anything strong smell like that can trigger a migraine so no I don't think it acceptable to use nail varnish in an enclosed area!in fact I would be Angry if the person next to me did!

ifancyashandy · 03/11/2012 08:47

OrangeLily, I said above that I'd done this on a train but it'd never occurred to me that people may find it offensive. Perhaps that's the thought process for most & not a case of 'Dont they know who I am!? Who gives a damn if this upsets the other passengers?!'

Binkybix · 03/11/2012 08:52

I was on a plane when someone was told to stop doing this because it was flammable. I also would not file my nails as I imagine people would find things that involve 'shedding' a bit grim.

GinaNicol · 03/11/2012 09:04

Some people do not have any consideration or respect for others! For the last 12 y I've been traveling by plane 4-6 times a year different airlines. Ones someone was having a garlic sosage sandwich just behind my seat creating a disgusting smell. Many people got sick while the flight attender was desperately trying to find guilty person. Horrible experience! However nobody is allowed to create discomfort to others on the plane in any way so do tell if something is bothering you because you have the right to have a pleasant flight!

mellen · 03/11/2012 09:16

I wouldnt mind nail painting, though I think that filing nails in an enclosed space is not OK.

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2012 09:18

I don't think anybody gets on a plane wondering how they can piss their fellow passengers off. They just don't think. Something else that annoys me is the constant rummaging in the overhead lockers (just why?) and everyone standing up as soon as the plane lands. Confused

lollilou · 03/11/2012 10:44

She was being very inconsiderate. My dh hates the smell of nail varnish (and remover) I have to go in dds room shut the door and sit by an open window. My perfume also gives him a sneezing fit so I have to spray it on outside, mind you it is Opium so not suprising reallySmile

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 03/11/2012 10:52

I wouldn't do this (don't wear varnish anyway) but bloody hell I love smells like that. That and marker pens and tippex. And printers ink.

I sound like a complete solvent addict.

Mind you, it is all very personal isn't it. I don't mind nail varnish, but I absolutely loathe and detest people eating hot food on a train, it is revolting to have to smell second hand bacon smells. I also think it is incredibly rude to blow your nose in public - go to the loo! And yet I commit the heinous MN crime of putting my make up on on the train, which I think is fine, yet I know loads of people think is completely beyond the pale.

TidyDancer · 03/11/2012 10:53

Oh I would definitely have to say something if I was on this flight. I can barely tolerate the smell at the best of times, let alone when I couldn't move away from it.

Very rude woman.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 03/11/2012 10:54

I would have asked to borrow her bottle of varnish to have a great big sniff.

Trills · 03/11/2012 10:59

I do nail varnish on the train.

I'm always impressed when people do their makeup, especially mascara. I've even seen flicky eyeliner applied on a moving train.

I wouldn't spray anything.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/11/2012 11:13

This is terribly rude, on a plane or on a train, tbh. It's an enclosed space, and you're making strong smells. Not ok!

bedmonster · 03/11/2012 11:19

GetOrf Grin People aren't allowed to blow their noses in public?! I would spend all my life in the loo as I have a permanent cold!
