DD will be fine. She adores everything her elder DBro does!!! ANd she and I get on so well...

I've ensured lots of trips for her too.

I know I'm going to do it.

I'm sure before he's 10, he will have conviced me that Vladivostock is a good idea Grin

My mum had cancer when I was 6YO... She is still alive now... but it's always stuck with me. Never put off till tomorrow what YOu could enjoy today. WHo cares if they are young and they remember most of it through photos? We'll have a blast!

Thankyou everlong - I hope you have a lovely holiday too

I think I just needed to say it out loud. My Family were shocked when I said I was doing Lands end to John O'Groats (with a then 2 and 4 YO) so this is hard on them... But we are going to have the best time. Grin

thanks

Are you taking 'The Canadian' in sleeper class from Van to TO? You will love it. And the kids will too - plenty of room to be active and explore the train without annoying the other passengers too much!

travailtotravel · 02/11/2012 21:07

Go, enjoy, come back and tell the tale.

yousankmybattleship · 02/11/2012 21:09

It sounds amazing but children of that age would enjoy Cornwall to Devon just as much. This is a holiday for you not the children, but there is nothing wrong with that.

pointtopoint · 02/11/2012 21:09

Yes, Bue we are... Stoppping off in Jasper for a day and then straight through ( I think) to Toronto...

It's going to be ace...

we did same trip when i was 9 db was 7 and dsis was 3. we saw amish and stayed in the blue ridge mountains in cabin, went under the falls on a walk and in a boat and went to quebec. loved nyc (it was 1982 so was really rough still - or at least to a 9 yo from the burbs). also went to a whaling museum in maine possibly??? Not sure if personally I would wait a couple of years but only so the kids have more memories, for us it would be a once in a lifetime trip. We did it with my folks in a car not train. My granny did the transsiberian and I really want to do it.

pointtopoint · 02/11/2012 21:12

I don't think you have met my son Yousank - unless Cornwall and Devon have trains running constantly and my son is shouting 'let's keep going let's keep going let's keep going' over and over.... then no... I don't think that's going to work.

Have i mentioned that my DS has autism? He's not your average 4YO.

I did a month around India when mine were 4 and 5. Amazing! We all loved it. Absolutely go for it!

I can highly recommend Vladivostok, it is a really lovely city and the people are very friendly. I haven't done the trans-Siberian railway but from what I know large parts of it aren't particularly scenic - day after day of pine forests.

They hosted the Asia Pacific Summit in Vlad in Sept and built a new airport terminal, a new road from the airport into town and three new bridges including the longest cable span bridge in the world. They are also building at least one new hotel. The new airport terminal looks like something out of a James Bond movie, all shiney and new. When I flew back from there a few weeks ago my plane was delayed because the Patriach of all Russia was visiting in his gold lear jet!

It has been an amazing transformation for a city that only 20 years ago was a closed city to foreigners.

Bisjo - You know we are coming in 2014 Grin

My DH worked in Russia for several years, so appreciate your comments about the gold lear jet

I did say there was nothing wrong in the holiday being all about you. There are trains in the UK/Europe though and I very much doubt the under fives appreciate long haul flights.

pointtopoint · 03/11/2012 07:44

I did think about Europe, we've already done all the trains in the uk, several times. Tbh, I might have to look at Europe again if the us trip is too expensive!

Do it!!!

We took our 3 DC who were 4.3, 2.7 and just turned 1 at the time to Oz for a month. We flew into Sydney and spent some time there before flying up to the Hamilton Islands. Spent time there with my DBro and his family before driving back down to Sydney. We drove about 1200 miles in total but took our time doing so - about 2.5 weeks - stopping at some places for one night and others for a bit longer. The longest journey we had to do in one day was for 8 hours as there was nothing in between but bush. But the DC were just fab!

The DC loved every minute of it and were so easy to look after, we didn't get stressed out by it at all. Yes, the trip was more for me and DH, and only the eldest can now remember bits of it but seeing as though we're the ones paying then we had to go when the time was right for us. I would do the whole thing again tomorrow if I could, although I reckon the journey would be a little bit harder now 2.5 years down the line!
