To think that GCSE drama productions should not involve sexual content?

Or am I an old prude? I'm all for sex education and stuff, but not sure about classes of teenagers making up and acting out plays with sexual content.

Background, have just been reading this employment appeals tribunal decision concerning the dismissal of drama teachers who allowed their class to put on a production depicting sexual abuse, incest and masturbation and my initial reaction was wtf were they thinking; but presumably they must have had some reason to think it was ok?

Note, lots of the decision is about whether the right process was followed rather than the acceptability of the production per se.

Well you shouldn't have been 'pushed' into anything. However, I believe teens have the right to rage.

GhostShip · 02/11/2012 21:41

YABU - but I know where you're coming from

socharlotte · 04/11/2012 18:01

I wonder how many parents would be happy for their 15or 16 yo sons to play a rapist of paedophile.i certainly wouldn't allow it.

Brycie · 04/11/2012 19:22

"I think most 15 and 16 year olds are far more thoughtful and responsible than you are giving them credit for FromEsme. I also find that you get far more from teenagers when you give them responsiblity and trust them."

I can imagine these words or words like them coming from the mouths of people who want to exploit them. You may be well-intentioned, mumsnot. But a lot of people who are NOT well-intentioned use the same rationale and the outcomes may be similar.

Brycie · 04/11/2012 19:24

FromEsme makes some excellent points here. The mumsnot some of the things you say sound naive. Well-intentioned but naive.

Themumsnot · 04/11/2012 19:36

Well, Brycie you and I are never going to agree about education are we?

Brycie · 04/11/2012 19:37

I don't know what you mean the mumsnot.

Themumsnot · 04/11/2012 19:47

I mean that we have disagreed on threads about education before Brycie and it seems that our philosophy is very different.
But I'm not naive. I teach teenagers and I have teenagers of my own. My beliefs are based on working with and living with teenagers. I don't think yours are, are they?

Brycie · 04/11/2012 19:49

I'm sorry I'd forgotten Smile

Themumsnot · 04/11/2012 21:32

That's good. Grin

FromEsme · 04/11/2012 22:22

themumsnot the real test is to see whether you and Brycie differ on dog poo in bins.

Themumsnot · 04/11/2012 23:19

FromEsme - what is Brycie's view on dog poo in bins? I'm not sure it's a subject I've ever given much consideration to, not having a dog.

Brycie · 05/11/2012 08:38

Oh nice - a bit of bitching and thread carry over. How mature.

Themumsnot · 05/11/2012 08:43

Wasn't intending to bitch, Brycie sorry if it came across that way. I genuinely don't know what FromEsme is referring to there.

Brycie · 05/11/2012 08:45

Ok that's sweet. Doesn't matter, don't worry.

FromEsme · 05/11/2012 17:38

Brycie I was having a joke because I thought it was funny that you agreed with me when we'd been arguing for DAYS about another issue.

If you don't think it's fair/funny, report it.

seeker · 05/11/2012 18:11

I was thinking of starting a thread about my concerns that 16 year old dd's next production is The Threepenny Opera- it sounds as if I'm getting off lightly!

For what it's worth, the production in the tribunal case sounds completely inappropriate. And the lack of warning to the audience was a huge mistake- there would be lots of younger siblings at it apart from anything else.

Brycie · 05/11/2012 18:50

Why would I report something for not being funny.

FromEsme · 05/11/2012 20:17

Brycie fucking hell you're hard work.

If it offended you, report it. If it didn't, then, shrug.
