I know how that conversation went this morning Grin

2 boys, 1 mum. 1 boy in trousers and very wrapped up. 1 mum very wrapped up. 1 boy in shorts and a light coat.

I just bet there was a

"put your trousers on"
"I don't need them"
"you'll feeze"
"no I won't"

"do what you like but you will be cold all day"

Or I am projecting and that only happens in my house?

I think I must be a terrible Mum as I almost take pleasure when any of my incorrectly dressed DC's get too cold, too hot or too wet. I can't help but tease them. They are older teens so it really is their choice how they dress but they aren't half daft sometimes. I just say the occasional 'Wont you be hot/cold/wet' and leave them to it.

My DS (18years) was wearing shorts and a teeshirt the other as it was part of his Halloween costume. Confused

RyleDup · 02/11/2012 09:53

My dc wears shorts to school all year round. Its part of the uniform.

McHappyPants2012 · 02/11/2012 09:53

sounds like my house in the morning, i don't resort to threats and bribes now i'll just pack a pair of trousers and if he gets cold he will put them on

I took a photo of ds2 (who is 4) the other day and sent it to dh at work. It was the rain running in rivulets down his face from his sodden hair.
He didn't need a hood and he wasn't wet. Grin

LeQueen - I laughed at your dd there. And also cahoots - I love it too. "You warm enough Ds1?" Hmm Grin

thebody · 02/11/2012 09:55

Pick battles, clothes arnt important I think.

The first thing DS2 does when he comes home from school is put his TNF t shirt on and a pair of camo shorts. That's all he has lived in at half term as well and it is flippin freezing here!!
Even the builder working in the house commented on him wearing shorts all the time.

mistlethrush · 02/11/2012 09:59

DS condescended to wear trousers today - but they're summer ones - but he put trousers on when I'd asked him to so there was no issue. He has been wearing shorts (and was the only one still in summer uniform) until half term and really doesn't want to go into winter uniform. I always see judgy looks as he gambles around ahead of me on walks in mid winter in just his Tshirt - then they see me laden down with jumper, hat, gloves and coat and get a wry smile instead.

TruthSweet · 02/11/2012 10:00

My DAD used to do this Shock He'd wear shorts (pretty short ones at that), a t-shirt, a jumper and trainers with pulled up socks - in NOVEMBER Hmm

I was so embarrassed by him as a teen. Now I am in my 30's and couldn't care less he dresses appropriately. I suspect he will be back in shorts in time for my children to be teenagers Grin

IsSpringSprangedYet · 02/11/2012 10:03

DS was late for school one morning, and the receptionist said "let's finish getting you dressed shall we?" and went to put his jersey on him. I kind of smirked as he NEVER wants his jersey on. So what does he do?? Smiles sweetly as she puts it on him with no bother.

He happily wears trousers in the day but no jumper or coat. And uppy sleeves only.

greenhill · 02/11/2012 10:05

PreDC I'd have thought (and kept it to myself): Can it be that hard to get a coat on a child?

After DC: at least they've got something on!

My DD went through a stage of running around stripping everything off (thankfully only inside the house) it was torture trying to get her to put anything on to leave the house. My DS only does this with socks and shoes, so far...

IsSpringSprangedYet · 02/11/2012 10:06

Oh and my MIL pulls a Hmm face when she sees the bottom of DS trousers getting worn away, because when DH and BILs were small (in the 60's), all little boys wore shorts, even in snow. They just had long socks on Shock

pictish · 02/11/2012 10:06

My father is a terrible dresser too. Sandals and socks, cut off denim shorts, a t-shirt, and a duffle coat!! I was mortified about him!

He's still a shit dresser in his baseball cap and bow tie, but I just laugh at with him now. Grin At least he's ditched the denim cut offs.

QuickLookBusy · 02/11/2012 10:07

When we were ever close to having this kind of conversation, I used to say "ok, I'm really not sure how warm it is, could you go and stand in the garden for a minute and check for me?"

They would usually come rushing in after 10 seconds complaining how cold it was.

KitKatGirl1 · 02/11/2012 10:11

Do I have the only Aspie ds who wears loads of layers and coats and everything even in the barely Spring or Autumn. He has a broken body clock too - only the other way!

In the roasting hot days of June (if we ever got any) he would be the only child in the entire school still wearing his jumper...

pictish · 02/11/2012 10:14

No - my ds2 is not aspie, but did insist vehemently on his blue stripey fleece jumper zipped up to the neck in the height of summer. He'd be red in the face and sweating, but any attempts at removal resulted in his clutching it fiercly and shrieking "NO NO NO NO NOOOOO! I WANT MY JUMPER!!" at top volume.

I left him to it and offered extra water. Wink

AppleCrumples · 02/11/2012 10:30

Am so glad I've seen this! I thought it was just my ds2 with wonky heating! He honestly thinks as long as the sun is out it must be warm enough for shorts even if the sun is shining on the snow!

At school he refuses to wear trousers and I get lots of funny looks when he's getting muddy and people tut when they see the state of his constantly scraped knees but then I agree you should pick your battles. He is happy and v active and never feels the cold plus people can see the other 2 are dressed appropiately!

shriekingnora · 02/11/2012 10:48

DD (8) went out for a walk yesterday in t-shirt, shorts and flipflops. I did tell her she'd be cold. She came back five minutes later and said 'you're right'. This is possibly the fisrt time she has admitted that I am right ever!

OHforDUCKScake · 02/11/2012 10:51

We are having this exact battle right now.

My 5 year old is currently wearinh a Hawian style shirt. Hmm

WofflingOn · 02/11/2012 10:53

Kitkat, I've known several other Aspies who do the bundling thing, including one who had a snorkel hood parka and rarely showed his face. Didn't overheat, even in summer.

shinybaubles · 02/11/2012 10:54

Ds2 is still wearing shorts at school, they're not allowed in trousers yet, and he isn't cold, all the running around outside I suppose. I am on the other hand freezing with multiple layers on.

AGlassHalfEmptyNoLonger · 02/11/2012 10:59

Kitkat - my aspie ds stays as he is in the morning, unless you fight him to change. So if it is cool and he goes in in a jumper, the jumper stays on. If it is warm but cools down later, he stays in t-shirt and shorts. And don't get me started about weekend/holidays. He will put on whatever trousers/shorts first come to hand and wander round in them all day, regardless of weather. If he goes outside, he puts his coat on over an otherwise naked top half. And then the coat stays on until bedtime whether he is in or out. Drives me batty.

redskyatnight · 02/11/2012 11:18

DS is "allowed" to wear shorts and a T shirt and no coat in the freezing cold because I have to spend my time making sure he doesn't wear sandals.

I also wonder why I bothered to label his school jumper with his name and didn't just accept that he would simply be storing it for 2 years till DD was big enough for it.

sashh · 02/11/2012 11:24

But it's still warm enough for shorts.
