followed a link from here to DM and came across this and seriously just wanted to bang my head against a wall

GrimAndHumourless · 01/11/2012 21:52

yes very off and ick

gordyslovesheep · 01/11/2012 21:53

just to be clear I have NO ISSUE with the way she is dressed or anything - it's the wording of the headline

and things like this Although it covered up her chest area and thighs, the design featured a high split which allowed her to pop her leg out of the side.
When she turned around, flesh was on show as the cut-out material scooped to just above her derriere and featured clasps which fastened at the centre of her beck.
I find that seriously odd

oh ffs - anyway that 'description' of her dress seems rather wierd

OP posts:
heggiehog · 01/11/2012 21:57

I had womanly curves aged 10!

gordyslovesheep · 01/11/2012 21:59

but heggie would it have been okay for a stranger to say 'wow look at Heggie flaunting her womanly curves' when you where 10?

that's the issue - not the fact that girls going into adulthood HAVE curves

OP posts:
lovebunny · 01/11/2012 21:59

many young women look lovely at fourteen but its creepy to describe their 'womanly curves' and drool over what flesh could or couldn't be seen, as that article does.

WearingGreen · 01/11/2012 22:00

I was womanly at about 11 and I'm also very short so it probably was quite an odd juxtaposition for a while. Very weird to describe a kid as womanly though.

Felicitywascold · 01/11/2012 22:00

OP I agree. The article is very distasteful.

The girl hasn't done anything wrong, but the language of the article is grim.

LadyBeagle · 01/11/2012 22:01

I totally agree Op.
But it's what the DM do best.
A beautiful young girl in fancy dress is suddenly turned into some sort of sexual object.
Did you see HIGNFY a couple of weeks ago?
Claire Balding pointed out exactly the same re a 16 year old girl in a bikini.
After all the Jimmy Savile shit going on at the moment, the thought of the mainly middle aged readership perving over a 14 year old is very uncomfortable to me.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 01/11/2012 22:01

Well said lady.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 01/11/2012 22:02

I'm glad someone else picked up on this because the headline made me Hmm from a newspaper that's been lapping up recent events.

LapsedPacifist · 01/11/2012 22:02

"Curves" is DM speak for "Tits" - ie:

"Celeb X is flaunting her curves in a skimpy bikini". Everyone knows THAT, shurely? Shock

The DM is basically perving over a 14 year old girl's tits. Whilst simultaneously frothing and gnashing about Jimmy Saville et al.

Nice.

Fakebook · 01/11/2012 22:03

The article is sleazy..."the outfit covered her chest and thighs", wtf?

YABU about womanly curves at 14. I had big boobs and curves at 14. I wish I looked that good at 14 though. My memory of my teenage years consists of my constant battle with pussy spots.

Merrylegs · 01/11/2012 22:07

Yes - that description is particularly creepy, really judgey and wholly unnecessary. Especially when read alongside the DM's earlier article -

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2214950/Ms-Fanning-hits-right-note-demure-maxi-dress-Ginger--Rosa-premiere.html

thus -

"Elle's a belle! Ms Fanning, 14, hits the right note in demure and age appropriate maxi dress at Ginger and Rosa premiere
By AMELIA PROUD
PUBLISHED: 07:37, 9 October 2012 | UPDATED: 11:17, 9 October 2012
Both she and her elder sister Dakota have been criticised for dressing in a provocative manner for their tender years.
But Elle Fanning, 14, hit the perfect balance at a screening of her new film with Christina Hendricks, Ginger and Rosa, tonight in New York."

Covered or uncovered, the DM seem to have a rather unhealthy obsession with this 14 year old.

Proudnscary · 01/11/2012 22:07

YABU!!!! It's not about whether you had big boobs or not at 14 (mine were enormo) it's about perniciously sexualising underage girls.

Proudnscary · 01/11/2012 22:08

Oops YANBU I meant!!!

fromheretomaternity · 01/11/2012 22:11

It is absolutely disgraceful and sickening.

LulaPalooza · 01/11/2012 22:36

YANBU. It's utterly fucking hypocritical of the odious DM to go on about a teenager's "womanly curves" in one article and then pretend to condemn Jimmy Savile and the culture of sleaze and sexual assault that was allowed to be perpetuated by him and around him.

Please don't misunderstand me, I am appalled by the Savile stories and all that is coming out in the press, but the way the DM has been reporting it has, to me, seemed to have an undertone of "yes he was vile, but come on... these young girls knew what they were doing". The articles about teen stars perpetuate the idea that teen girls are fair game for men of any age to perve over. Vile.

ravenAK · 01/11/2012 22:42

It's revolting. Leery & salacious & designed to put her firmly in an objectified box.

Not the dress, or the photos - they're fine - the DM's sleazing. Ugh.

LulaPalooza · 02/11/2012 00:18

Can I please borrow your brain bleach, raven?

The DM has, once again, left me disproportionately ragey. Even a thread about fabric conditioning a kitten and the marvels of living in London have not mollified my ire at the DM.

I really should stop reading the DM. How can I ban myself?

Loveweekends10 · 02/11/2012 05:29

My 12 year old is a foot taller than me and definitely has womanly curves. I wish she looked more like 12 but even at 6 she looked 9. I caught a 20 odd year old bloke at the cinema eyeing her up as I walked behind her the other day. I wanted to scream 'she is 12 for gods sake'. She dresses as a 12 year old thankfully - hoodies, jeans and teddy bear hats.

YerMaw1989 · 02/11/2012 10:55

Why is accepting that some 14 year olds look like young women/condoning jimmy saville Confused
Has the full moon brought the hysterics out?
if you have started your periods law aside you are no longer physically a child, so it makes sense some will look like women its really not rocket science.
Plus I don't actually think that image looks particularly womanly tbh just a shit article with a shit title.

Trills · 02/11/2012 11:06

A 14 year old may have curves that are like those a woman would be expected to have - therefore she does technically have "womanly curves".

But it's highly inappropriate to talk about them.

gordyslovesheep · 02/11/2012 11:09

YerMaw are you being deliberately obtuse?

No one is hysterical

no one is saying young girls don't have curves

the point is a nation newspaper describing a 14 year old child in such a way - adding the 'flaunting' bit and also the description within the article

I don't think it is at all 'hysterical' to suggest that is a bit off, creepy and hypocritical :)
