AIBU to want to pay the price advertised at the time of booking?

I've been in to a local beautician's shop today to book make up for me, two bridesmaids and my mum for my wedding day. I spoke to a nice woman who took all the details etc and I took a leaflet of prices.

An hour or so later I got a phone call from the same woman, who said "I've spoken to the manager about your booking and she just wanted me to let you know that the prices on the leaflet you took are the current prices, and prices may change by the time you come in for your wedding make up." (NB- wedding is in six months). To clarify, I asked "So I would need to pay the price that it has changed to then, not the price that it is advertised as now, at the time of booking?" She said "Unfortunately yes". She was unable to say when prices might change, or by how much.

I don't really have experience of booking things in advance like this, so is this normal? I mean, I'm sure the price of my wedding venue may go up for the 2013/14 season, but I will still be paying the price advertised in 2012 when we booked it.

They should at least tell you what the price will be when you book, so you have the choice to accept it or not. I wouldn't book there if they won't confirm the price you will have to pay.

Are they asking you to pay a deposit now and the balance later? If so, you are contracting now, and are not BU to want to pay the prices you see now (otherwise they could charge whatever they feel like). On the other hand, if you aren't paying anything upfront, then yes this is normal.

Yanbu. Any professional offering a service should take a booking at the current price. I am a professional and would never say this to a client.

Maybe they're trying it on because it's a wedding? Is your engagement ring massive? I ask that because when I worked in a wedding dress shop, I was told "Check out the girl's "rocks" and if they're big, treat them nicely."

I hated that job.

No that's not the normal way of doing things. They have to honour the price at the time of booking. I would go elsewhere, they could put the price up ridiculously!

Thanks everyone, I've spoken to DP about it too and he's said similar to you. I'm going to phone up tomorrow and say I have a budget I need to stick to and need to know the price that I'm going to be paying, and if they can't give me one then I'll book elsewhere.

MrsKeithRichards You're right about sticking wedding in front of anything. The 'bridal' hair updo is over double the price of the 'special occasion' updo at the hairdresser!

MrsCantSayAnything Funnily enough I wasn't even wearing my engagement ring as I slept at my sister's last night (hen party planning committee!) and left it there by mistake!

Can you pay now for it?
