magazines. As I've said before on here I work for a large supermarket, and the other day 2 young lads (late teens) came in to buy Nuts magazine. I had just refreshed my age restricted sales training and there wasn't anything on it about magazines. I checked with the store and there is no age restriction on this (only if they contain DVD's or games). I have since looked online and can't find anything to say that I shouldn't have served these boys. AIBU to think there should be an age restriction on these types of magazines?

Morrisons have refused to sell me Alcohol free pear cider because I haven't had any ID on me! Apparently the age limit still applies because it's sold in the alcohol section and could promote drinking...

I seem to be in the minority but IMO YANBU. I think mags with naked women, sex stories etc. should have age limits. Otherwise it is too accessible to young kids, who are very impressionable. I know they may get hold of it somehow, and that's life. But to be able to buy one each, every week, before you've even had your first snog seems wrong to me. It removes all the innocence and porn can be addictive too

Yes spoons, I was id'd for alcohol free wine once.

YABU, late teens is and should be old enough to make your own mind up about what magazines, books and newspapers you buy. And if you restrict Nuts, what else are you going to censor? I haven't bought many magazines as frequently as I did when I was younger, so I'm not certain of the content, but there was a lot of fairly explicit written material (as opposed to just a picture of some tits) in magazines like Cosmo and More, which I was reading from the age of about 12. A few years ago a magazine called Scarlet (short lived, now defunct) was launched, it was all about sex and had erotic literature, articles about sex toys and all sorts - is it just the pictures you have an issue with? People have to learn from somewhere. You can see boobs in the Sun, that's not going to die soon, and porn is freely available online, so I see no use in censoring magazines which are a dying breed anyway. Innocence is something which is gradually lost, it's natural to be curious and look at "naughty" magazines.

I can't see that it matters when they can readily get anything on the internet.

nailak · 31/10/2012 22:31

in that case games and films shouldnt have ratings either coz u can download them

pigletmania · 31/10/2012 22:43

Yabvu late teens 17+ nthing wrong with it IMO, lads being lads. I used to ogle nekkid men in playgirl magazine in my teens, did me no harm tis a right if passage

flyoverthegoldenhill · 31/10/2012 23:13

So a boy of 17 is old enough to : get married, have sex, join the army - but not buy tasteless magazines, christmas crackers, plastic spoons, non alcoholic beverages ? And we wonder why kids are fucked up !

CelticPromise · 31/10/2012 23:29

OP has clarified that she wasn't concerned about these particular buyers, just surprised at lack of any age limit.
