(Warning DM Link) This has appeared during my regular shameful trawling of Femail and I'm not too sure of my rationale but is it just me who thinks FFS.

As babies can never really decide what they wear and we all use our own taste to pick their clothes isn't this just a ridiculous comment to make?

I understand its more of an American thing, although I have pictures of myself as a baby dressed up and I remember putting DS in a Father Christmas costume 16 years ago. Also it feels to me as though there have been costumes for very young toddlers for years. However I just can't see that this is that bigger deal. I suppose its a bit naff and maybe at a stretch you are objectifying them but to me no more than when you say 'no I don't want my child wearing that ugly sleepsuit I prefer x style".

Come and correct me if I'm wrong, I'm prepared to be enlightened.

I put my DD2 in a halloween costume (she made a really cute little witch) when we went to a party, more for the sake of her siblings than anything else, I don't have a problem with dressing them up occassions and if you want to dress your baby as a pizza slice then that's entirely up to you even if it's not something I would do myself. YANBU, it's a non-issue. why are we both commenting on non-issues? I'm sure I could be doing something more useful

Haha at less than 12 month old babies not getting a say in what they wear! DD2 is 7months. She quite likes going without her nappy and pissing on the carpet, should that be her choice to make? She also does not like having her coat on, shall I just let her freeze?

I love babies in silly costumes! I certainly don't hold it against my mother for dressing me up in a hand knitted ghost costume when I was a baby! It's a funny picture!

One of my pet hates is seeing small children and babies dressed up for Halloween/Christmas or whatever.

It is pointless, and also a bit chavvy - IMO.

I just can't understand why Kidscape have felt the need to release this 'statement'. Is there really much difference between putting your baby in say a party frock for a special occasion to putting them in a pumpkin costume for Halloween?

Also I thought they were an anti-bullying charity, maybe I'm wrong but totally bizarre they would feel compelled to comment on this. I don't think by an stretch of the imagination it can be claimed dressing your child up is the first sign of abuse or a marker for an unhappy childhood, unless maybe it was the pizza slice costume [hwink]

Oh bloody hell it's only a bit of fun! I fully intent to dress my as yet unborn Son in all kinds of fancy things so we can celebrate his 18th Birthday in traditional style! :)

I didn't read the article properly - they claimed that it was a first sign of abuse??? WTF?? (I agree that the pizza slice costume is a wee bit weird, to say the least, )

It's not that parents haven't dressed up there kids for generations , the difference is nowadays less people make costumes/outfits, (partially as sewing skills aren't there, but mainly due to cheap imports) and tend to buy them instead!
I was dressed as a wee spider for Halloween 33 yrs ago by my mother obviously this objectification has skewed my opinion though

oh that bear cub sleep suit on astarla is adorable . I think it's rather odd to use a special occasion where people often dress up, such as Halloween as some sort of example of a supposedly concerning trend to objectify babies....

What a load of rubbish. I loved putting outfits on my lot for Halloween Christmas or whatever the holiday was.

For Halloween as little babies two have been pumpkins in a one piece pajama suit and one was a teddy.
I think the Author was just being a bit grinchy, my kids were never used as accessories.
Dd went to school today dressed as a Ladybird. (no uniforms and a parade at playtime)

I have very cute pictures of DD aged about 18 months (maybe less) in a homemade Pingu costume . SHe seems to have turned out OK...

Just put my 11 mo to bed. He's been in his pumpkin costume alll day. He has a bear all in one and a Charlie bear hat. I've brought a Santa costume for Christmas day.

My dd was 3 months last Halloween and wore a fleecy pumpkin babygro. She looked adorable, but the best thing about the babygro was that it was really warm and made the perfect 'post-swimming stay warm outfit'. She was a pumpkin all of the way through November and most of the way through December on swimming days!

Ds2 (2)has spent the day dressed as crocodile with a 2 foot tail as a baby he was dressed in costumes for any occasion

LST DD2 (7 months) has spent the day as a witch. I also drew whiskers on DD1 with eyeliner and applied pink blusher to her cheeks for her cat costume
