to be at the end of my tether with recurrent thrush

Wrong place to post i know, but wanting maximum chance of advice.

In a nutshell, i have had thrush practically every month for the last couple of years. I have tried the self help measures, loose trousers, no soap, no knickers in bed etc etc. I even tried washing my knickers with eco balls but still no improvement. Took a fluconazole yesterday again. Only 3 weeks since my last treatment. Getting so fed up with feeling uncomfortable.
The only thing i have not tried is a sugar free anti candida diet as i am sceptical about this.

Please help me and my itchy fangita. Ta

I'm not sure which one it us, I'm in bed but I'll post the name when I get up.

strictlovingmum · 30/10/2012 23:27

I don't have it often but when I do it is a daddy of them all, last time I had thrush was when being pregnant with DS, many, many years ago and now.
Yesterday in desperation I froze some onken yogurt in ice trays, and popped one in at bedtime and miracle this morning it's gone, no more itching, relief was instant.
All day today I had a tampon dipped in live yogurt and changed it every hour, I will pop one more iced yogurt tonight and see how I go.
I have no canesten in the houseSadBlush
Warning, it can get messy.

Poor poor you. I was prescribed bettadine suppositories daily after constant thrush and this worked.

cocolepew · 30/10/2012 23:37

Oh the relief from cold yoghurt! Fabulous.
My mum used strawberry yoghurt, with bits of strawberries in it Hmm. She thought she was supposed to just use a probiotic one. Now that did get messy!

VirginiaDare · 30/10/2012 23:43

The sugar stuff is utter nonsense, no trial has ever proved any link.

Probably because if you think about it, the sugar you eat goes into your stomach, and nowhere near your fanjo.

DolomitesDonkey · 31/10/2012 03:48

Virginia That ^ is one of the most extraordinarily dim comments I have ever seen on mn, you actually deserve a medal for it.

I know you're going to argue your point a little and it probably all makes perfect sense to you. But what you're saying equates to saying that you won't get a fat arse because food only goes to your stomach!

YerMaw1989 · 31/10/2012 08:35

I feel your pain OP plus pregnancy means I can take the anti bio's and it stays dormant and the pessary didn't seem to do enough.

Fakebook · 31/10/2012 08:38

Didn't someone write on a thread a few weeks ago, that they put garlic up their v hole to treat thrush and it sorted out the problem. Get a clove of garlic and use it as a pessary OP!!

Fakebook · 31/10/2012 08:40

Aaw Virginia, your comment made me giggle. Here, have a , my first one ever!

BigBroomstickBIWI · 31/10/2012 08:43

It isn't nonsense and candida albicans (if this is what the OP is suffering from) is in your gut. It's in the gut anyway, but it's the over-growth of it that causes thrush - as well as a host of other conditions - and sugar feeds the over-growth.

A good probiotic will also help to colonise the gut with healthy bacteria (especially helpful here, and after a course of antibiotics, which wipe out all the bacteria in the gut, including the good ones). Get something like acidophilus, from a good healthfood shop. They will be kept in the fridge.

Putting yoghurt on your fanjo will help relieve the topical symptoms but won't deal with the internal problem.

In my mid-twenties I had nearly a year of hell with thrush, I left work 'sick' on a couple of ocassions as I couldn't sit down I was so sore.

My GP gave me all the help they could, eventually sent me for a gynae referral, after a vulval biposy (which was fine) sent me to a dermatologist. Basically I had a kind of excema, which was upsetting flora and fauna and causing the thrush, one tube of something simple like betnovate later and it was gone and has never ( with exception to very mild infrequent doses) returned.

Push your GP if you've exhausted, diet, standard treatment, self help etc

Good luck, I really do sympathise

EscapeInTheCity · 31/10/2012 08:59

2 words: diet (go and see a nutitionist) and acupuncture.
That did wonders to me.

Sazzle41 · 31/10/2012 09:28

Its prob not thrush - have you been tested for Bacterial Vaginosis? Its v similar symptoms but a slight fishy smell as well (I know, tmi) and recurrs like feck ... I had what i thought was recurring thrush until an enlightened lady Doc suggested BV and voila it was that after all (incredibly common)...

cocolepew · 31/10/2012 10:28

The probiotic I use us on the Pure Bio website and is called Probiotic-5, as BIWI says it needs to be kept in the fridge. Take one in the morning and one at night .

lovebunny · 31/10/2012 10:30

yes, your partner needs treatment or you'll be re-infected every time.
stop taking dairy products but use live natural yoghurt in the affected area.
