Baby outdoors in winter AIBU?

I have horses, and need to tend to them each day. Sometimes it takes a while. If baby isn't cold (so wrapped up as warmly as needed), AIBU to have him outside with me? Should he only be in a warm car or house? Have some people saying 'poor baby' whenever they see him outside, warm and cosy in his layers, and some surprised when I do leave him at home with DH. Really confused here. Surely if he's warm it's ok?

I'm another one whose mother is a fan of babies sleeping outdoors. When DS was newborn she was always on at me about wrapping him up and sticking him out on the balcony! I obliged her...once.

Snow suit, footmuff and raincover for the pushchair will be your friend. Don't worry, I promise the baby won't melt. My ds was born in November and survived despite being at the yard for at least an hour a day. He is now a strapping 8 yo with the constitution of an ox.

I agree with Nullius when its dead cold, a good snow suit is very good.

GruesomewhereInCanada · 30/10/2012 19:19

Another Mum in Canada here. We have a foot of snow and it's -10 today. I took DS (10 months) out today in a long sleeve vest, sleep suit and a North Face all in one with a hat.

Lots of children out playing and babies/toddlers being pulled on sledges. Our snow isn't good for snowmen or snowballs sadly.

FredFredGeorge · 30/10/2012 19:21

That sounds more likely to be too much than not enough, especially with a rain cover too!

Sirzy · 30/10/2012 19:23

DS (nearly 3) is probably one of those you class as being 'trussed up' but with good reason. He is asthmatic and as much as he needs the fresh air I'm not going to take him out without being well wrapped up as the cold can hit his chest badly.

Perhaps people need to concentrate on what is right for their own children and not worry about others (except if they are out in shorts and nothing else in -10 degrees of course)

I know you weren't judging respberry, it was some previous comments complaining about children wearing to much which I was commenting on.

plutocrap · 30/10/2012 20:03

That rule of thumb about one more layer is good, but make sure you judge how much you would be wearing if you were sitting, not walking!

PickledFanjoCat · 30/10/2012 20:04

I agree Sirzy with the one layer more thing, and also need to remember we are walking around and if the nippers are in the pram or fall asleep they will feel the cold more.

Just use lots of layers and you can add and remove at will.

apostropheuse · 30/10/2012 20:06

They're numpties.

Fresh air is good for babies.

Get him as much of it as you can.

Hermionewastherealhero · 31/10/2012 06:36

I'm about to wake my DS up so he can come with me to turn out and muck out the horses. Non horsey friends are always shocked he comes to the yard! He is happy there and I hope he continues to be.
