YANBU.

People driving too slowly are a pain in the arse and if you can't keep up with the flow of traffic and cause numerous other vehicles to build up behind you, you shouldn't be driving IMO.

Of course people will drive more slowly in bad weather, that's just sensible. Driving at 30 on a straight road where the limit is 50 is just plain annoying.

VinegarTits · 29/10/2012 14:54

why didnt you overtake? if its safe to do so then there is nothing wrong with a none aggresive overtake, they might have been unfamiliar roadds to that person, she might have even been lost, yabu to think she should drive at the speed limit just because its there, and its your own fault you got annoyed for not wanting to overtake her

sadie3 · 29/10/2012 14:54

Thank you Outraged

Plenty of roads are national speed limit areas, but you'd be a loon to drive on them at 60. The law assumes a degree of common sense.

It does irritate me when people drive more slowly that I'd like, but a little understanding goes a long way.

malinois · 29/10/2012 14:58

If you 'don't like to' overtake in circumstances which from your description it would be perfectly reasonable and safe to do so, then perhaps you should be looking at improving your own driving skills before criticising others.

FredFredGeorge · 29/10/2012 15:02

If it was safe to overtake, YWBU not to overtake. You admit your judgement over your driving ability led you to not overtake despite the situation allowing it, but fail to acknowledge the other drivers judgement on the safe speed.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 29/10/2012 15:08

Lord yes, Mal.

Drives me nuts when stuck behind a tractor and the person in front daren't overtake despite it being safe to. Although again I try to be understanding.

malinois · 29/10/2012 15:17

jenai the trick is to have a motorcycle (or a very quick car) - then you can overtake the tractor and all the ditherers queued up behind it all in one go Grin

blueraincoat · 29/10/2012 15:23

YANBU I honestly think people driving way too slowly when there is no need are dangerous.

TheWholeCaboodle · 29/10/2012 15:27

Maybe they were keeping an eye out for a turning? Maybe they had a nervous or injured passenger who wanted them to go fairly steadily? YABU

I had one of these yesterday. Nose to the wheel, doing 35 in a 50. And, yes, I was annoyed. I had to get to the shop before 4pm and she was determined to stop me. YANBU.

grimbletart · 29/10/2012 15:54

Obviously you drive slowly if conditions dictate but assuming a clear road and good conditions driving more slowly than the flow of traffic indicates a confidence/insecurity problem. This is where the driving test fails - it only tests people under relatively slow conditions when it should be testing a person's ability to handle a car under the sort of conditions they are likely to encounter once they have passed their tests.

Hammy02 · 29/10/2012 15:58

YANBU. My mum drives too slowly. She doesn't seem to notice the massive queue of cars behind her which would be a sure-fire warning that she is driving too slowly.

ItsAFuckingVase · 29/10/2012 16:24

The speed limit is a target speed, provided the conditions are safe - ie dry and not foggy.

Somebody driving at 30 in a 50 zone isn't displaying the ability to drive at the required conditions of the road and would fail a test for it.

IvorHughJackolantern · 29/10/2012 16:28

I agree with blue; and they're dangerous because they wind people up by plodding along for no purpose, which encourages overtaking when it's not necessarily sensible. People who go on about how they always drive at 30 unless they're on a motorway (I've met a few of these) always go on to boast about how '...and I've never had an accident'. No you berk but you've probably caused several. Grr

PrincessOfChina · 29/10/2012 16:29

I failed my driving test for not driving at the speed limit. I was told that the limit is the appropriate speed for the road, assuming normal conditions, and you should be driving at that speed where possible. It's dangerous to drive much slower than the limit - I think you can be pulled over for "failing to progress at an appropriate speed" or something.

PrincessOfChina · 29/10/2012 16:30

kim And older driver who is only safe to drive at slow speeds is not fit to drive full stop.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 29/10/2012 16:43

A person who is unable to cut another motorist a little slack here and there is less fit, imo.

We will all of us be old one day (if we're lucky). I'd rather we were a little patient and understanding of older drivers that they lost their independence through being driven (as it were) off the road by speed freaks.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 29/10/2012 16:45

Bollocks is it a target speed, vase - are you honestly saying that on a single track, hilly and twisty lane you'd be aiming to hit 60?

WelshMaenad · 29/10/2012 16:50

YaNbu. If it is safe to travel at the speed limit if the road then drivers shouldn't be falling far below it. The police can and will pull you over for obstructing the flow of traffic if you are driving at a speed significantly below the legal limit in safe conditions. People who drive at 20-30moh beneath the limit are a danger and a menace, and I do try yo be tolerant of older drivers on the roads, but this does raise questions if competency IMO.

Fiendishlie · 29/10/2012 16:51

From the gov.uk website:
The speed limit is the absolute maximum and it doesn't mean it's safe to drive at this speed in all conditions.
So all you who are saying its a target, or you've been told by instructors or examiners not to drive slower than this are all mistaken, or have been misinformed.
YABU op.

Goldmandra · 29/10/2012 16:51

I drive slightly under the speed limit where it is 30-50mph but I usually drive well under 60mph on roads marked as national speed limit. It isn't safe to do 60mph on many parts of them and the limit isn't a target in those cases. You need to drive at the speed which gives you ample time to stop in the distance you can see clearly in front of you.

I have driven my DD to hospital and back five times in the last month and, each time, I've done it slowly and carefully because she has been in considerable pain. It would be a shame to thank everyone behind me assumed I was either incompetent or scared.
