to refuse to work on Christmas Eve

for 1 hour. I work for a supermarket petrol station and my normal Monday shift is from 7pm until 10.15pm, but on Christmas Eve we have been told that we will be closing at 8. AIBU to say that I won't go in for 1 hour? Even if I go in I will still owe them 2.25 hours work. As far as I am concerned they can either ASK if the people who work until 7 would mind staying on until 8 or just close at 7.

I personally wouldn't bother.

If you are contracted to work Mondays, YABU. And you could potentially be in trouble for refusing to go in.

What is your reason for not wanting to work?

Why would you not go in if it is your allocated shift?

I'd just be happy you weren't having to stay until close!

This happened in the library I worked in. Usually an 8pm finish but Christmas eve was 5pm so I had to do my usual 30 mile round trip for 2 hours work but I was just pleased I wasn't going to be there all night!

Could you go in earlier so you get normal pay and don't owe hours?

Because it is Christmas Eve and I don't want to travel to work for a one hour shift and still owe them time. I'd be quite happy to do my usual shift but it seems a complete waste for 1 hour.

Yabu. it's your job! Just because it's inconvenient does not mean you get to pick and choose.

Have they said this is what you have to do? Generally Xmas eve our hours get changed to fit in with store opening time

Do the shift but I dont see why you'd owe them hours if it was their decision to close the shop earlier than normal. So I would argue that but still do the one hour shift.

I cant see how you could get away with not going in. I dont see why you should owe them time though if they are shutting early. Not your fault.

Ask the people working the day shift to do your hour and offer to cover for them in return?

Does seem a bit bonkers to close so soon into a new shift but I guess they have their reasons. As they have decided that's what they want though, you just have to suck it up.

Agree that it's tough. I do see your point and I do sympathise, but it's a working day and the 7-8 shift is still a shift.

Rather than refuse, see if you can negotiate. Can someone who works till 7 do your hour if you do one of their hours on a different day?

At first I thought YWNBU but then I remembered that if I want Christmas Eve off I have to book the whole day as holiday, even though the office ALWAYS gets shut at lunchtime. Same really.

Meh I'd ring in sick. Hopefully the weather would be snowy ect and you could say your snowed in.

As such I'd be grateful and turn up for the hour. Hardly fair to expect your colleagues to do overtime on xmas eve for it.

They pay for the entire shift but then expect you to make up the hours at their convienience.

I would try and 'swap' with one of the other two people doing the earlier shift and do theirs and your own hour. I agree with you that it's a pain in the bum to go for only an hour but you can't just refuse to go to work.

YABU I'm afraid - it's a pain in the ass yes, but hey at least you have a job and can afford Xmas presents for your nearest and dearest - there's a million folk out there who would love to have this to moan about but don't have a job.
