That is actually not chicken, but rabbit! My grandma has been in a nursing home for a while, she broke her knee and couldn't manage to go home and look after herself so she booked herself into the nursing home next door.

One night they had 'chicken' pie for tea, the carer that took my grandma hers told her it was actually rabbit, but the other residents wouldn't eat it if they knew, so they were all told it was chicken!

This isn't any old crappy home either, it's meant to be one of the best ones in our town, last month my grandmas bill was over 4.5k for both her and her husband (he is there full time) Shock

AIBU to think this is bloody disgraceful? I've been furious at MIL before when I ate chicken pie then found out later it was actually rabbit.

We served rabbit at our wedding reception, a few people were a bit squeamish but everyone who tried it enjoyed it.

Oh and I don't believe this story for a second.

Given the recent news story about the actual abuse that goes on in some care homed nothinh would suprise me actually.

Maybe it was a joke but if not it is wrong to decieve the residents in this way.

We live next door to a large nursing home and my bedroom overlooks their kitchen. The food is all delivered weekly by a catering company. It is all pre-prepared frozen stuff, which just gets reheated and served up by the 'cooks'.

Honestly, the kitchen staff wouldn't have a clue how to prepare freshly-shot rabbits and cook them in a pie from scratch! Hmm And they would lose their H&S certificates too!

I am wondering if this home is even suotable for your GM, if she really is the only one who is all there.

suitable

I'm a bit Confused as to how some people are reacting to the op.

AFAIU it cunny is distressed that vulnerable people are being told they're eating one thing but are actually being fed quite another. I'd be happy to eat chicken but not rabbit, for ethical reasons that are probably daft (I had a pet rabbit and loved it, I've never loved a chicken) but which are no less valid for being so. If someone offered me a rabbit pie I would decline. If I were old, vulnerable, and unable to tell the difference, I would be distressed to discover that the people in a position of power over me - whom I am paying to look after me in accordance with my values - were feeding me rabbit and telling me I was eating chicken.

Simple. Not nice. YANBU.

If this really is what's happening, I'd speak to Environmental Health.

Caterers have to keep clear records of every item bought and served, where it was bought from, batch numbers, best before dates, etc. If they are sneaking dodgy rabbit meat into meals, then they won't have any records for it and can get fined.
