... i can afford more but he's only going to be almost 11 months and does not want or need much. He's getting a bounce and spin zebra a couple of cheap baby books and a night garden DVD, he will be spoiled rotten from both sides for the family (first GC on DP's side second on mine) so i don't see the point in buying him more.

According to a few people thats a bit mean just because he's a baby he shouldn't go without, which he isn't because i spent £60 on toys at 6 months so he has tones already. Someone i know has spent £250 all on credit cards on her baby who will be 15mo at xmas to me thats unreasonable

AIBU not spending all we have on DS? I seriously don't think i am, his favourite toy right now is an empty diet coke bottle FFS

I didn't buy anything for either of my babies first 3 christmas's. My oldest had so much from other people that he had no idea and when I had my second I wrapped up some of my older sons outgrown toys to add to everyone else's ... So yanbu to spend less but Abu about spending as much as £60

Wouldn't it be much more sensible to put £50 in bank account and but something for £10??

QuanticoVirginia · 28/10/2012 19:37

buy not but obv

Pumpster · 28/10/2012 19:40

Buy him a helium balloon...

MixedBerries · 28/10/2012 19:50

DS got nothing from us for his 1st birthday. We knew family would spoil him despite protests. We just put £30 into his savings account and he had a card.

He won't be getting anything from us for Christmas either. We don't do presents for Christmas in my family but DH's family will go completely overboard. He's only 1 FGS and he'd be far better off us being able to turn the heating on a bit longer in the evenings, put some food on the table or go on a day trip. They really, really don't need much stuff at this age.

I spent £2 on dd's first Christmas. She is the 2nd child so had plenty of toys and she was only 9m old. Nobody was any the wiser and the bill for this year for the pair of them (they re both at school now) will hugely more. Money well saved earlier on!

pinkyp · 28/10/2012 19:55

Yanbu BUT I wouldn't get your judgy pants on about the friend who spent more, do whatever your comfortable with.

kige · 28/10/2012 19:56

I also used to wrap up old toys of theirs in subsequent Christmases !

MsVelvet · 28/10/2012 20:01

I have hardly spent anything on my dd each Christmas as i just haven't got it, but what i do get her she has never been disappointed. I don't think you have to spend lots just to make it special

Cabrinha · 28/10/2012 20:10

I'm surprised you're even asking, tbh - just decide what's right for you - why do you care what others think?
Btw, that zebra... They go for bobbins on eBay, I know as I just sold one for £9 and tracked a fair few first. Prices are low because there are so many and have to be local pick up. If there's one near you, that about £40 saved right there!

Lueji · 28/10/2012 20:21

I have only spent more than that once, I think.

You spend what you want.

rhondajean · 28/10/2012 20:51

YANBU.

We spent £100 on each first Xmas but apart from us there are only one set of gps an uncle and a ggm Who buy for ours. £60 is plenty. Keep the cash for when he's older!
