I don't usually get involved with TV, but The Thick of It has always gripped me.

It was heart-rending to see MT broken and defeated last night, pouring his ashen heart out to Snakey Ollie. When he was talking about having no real friends, no children (gulp) and no memoirs, you got a small glimpse of a normal man who has given up everything for a thankless job that has turned him into nothing but, as he said, a host.

Made me want to collect him out of the cab at the end and take him home for some food.

I know when Ollie dropped him and carried on going he was only doing what MT would have done, but I hope he does end up pissing himself on his BIL's sofa.

The very obviously positioned children's paintings in his old office were a genius bit of set-dressing - they really captured that cynical 'hey, I'm in this magnificent wood-panelled office of power but I'm still a regular family guy' persona some New Labour types liked to promote, while remaining in shot for some of the most vitriolic verbal savagings ever broadcast.

I may be alone in this - perfectly prepared to accept that if so - but I find Peter Capaldi strangely attractive...............

Do you know what made me sad? The comparison of his office at Opposition headquarters to the magnificent one he used to have at Downing Street.

I think in the early series he was v closely modelled on AC, who does have kids, but later he became fully his own character.
