To be annoyed about people telling me my bump is too small for my number of weeks?

I would say 90% of people tell me my bump is very small for my weeks (24). Bearing in mind I could barely keep anything down for 4 months it's not surprising I've not put on loads of weight but at the 19 week scan the sonographer said the baby was growing absolutely fine and measuring normally (big relief given the sickness). But now I'm getting worried again because people keep saying my bump is small. Having said that the one person who reassured me was an ex midwife colleague of mine who wanted to guess how far gone I was and from looking guessed one week ahead (guessed 24 weeks at 23 weeks). So why do I get so annoyed at everyone else telling me I'm small?

Oh sorry, forgot I posted that Grin

Because the size of the pelvis correlates with the size of the feet.

So small feet = small pelvis.

When you're pregnant everyone seems to think that comments are fine - it's very annoying! As is everyone thinking it's ok to touch the bump.
But FWIW I had a small bump with DC3. Lots of people didn't even know I was pregnant until about 26 weeks. The midwife measured me twice at some apointments to see if she needed to refer me for a growth scan, as bump size was on the lowest centile.... baby turned out to be 9 1/2 pounds!

PrincessPumpkinshoutsBOO · 27/10/2012 17:44

Oh I see Worra well with size 9 feet I won't worry about high birth weight babies [hgrin]

Mo it is the touching that is worse than the comments for me, just because my belly enters a room before me does not mean it is there for fondling, I am not a touchy feely sort anyway.

YAsoNBU. When I was pg with DD1, I got told off for walking through A&E (non-clinical area) corridor on the way to do some stuff in the server room. The detour was miles. I was 35 weeks pg. I told the minion who questioned me and was accused of lying. I had a nice, neat bump, from behind you couldn't tell I was pg as no spread, and DD was 7lb 6oz when born, so definitely not tiny. I wanted the short cut because I was bloody knackered!

I carried small second time round too, no maternity clothes until 28 weeks, and DD2 was 7lb 11oz. Some people just have small bumps, people should take other people's word for how pg they are.

ClutchingPearls · 27/10/2012 17:59

All my bumps were small and I never show at all until 30ish weeks. In size 10/12 so people assume there's no where for baby to hind and baby must be small.

At term, women with an average size 6 month bump out size me.

I had a horrid experience with a 20week pregnant woman that wanted my seat as she was more pregnant than me, I was 39 weeks. I told her she couldn't get much more pregnant than that.

Ignore, practice saying 'thanks for you opinion'.

BatCave · 27/10/2012 18:00

Well some people would say I had a tiny bump and others said I was huge so I reckon it's just something to say, people just HAVE to make some sort of comment. I'd say it reflects them more than you. I was actually quite big, 91st centile and 9lb 3oz chunker monker came out.

PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 27/10/2012 18:09

Have to admit it makes me chuckle when it's some middle-aged dude with a massive beer belly doing the commenting

Do you think they're worried about the competition?

MyLastDuchess · 27/10/2012 20:28

PurplePidj I know what you mean, I am 37 weeks and so sick of people telling me "You look like you're about to pop!" So tempted to say, "That's funny, I was just thinking the same about you." [hgrin]

OP, YANBU. Most people don't have a flippin' clue what an average-sized pregnant belly looks like at any gestation. The whole time throughout my pregnancy I've had people saying how big I am. They look really sceptical when I say, "Actually the midwife says I'm exactly average." And if one more person asks me if I'm sure it's not twins Angry

As far as I'm concerned the only comment that a non-medical-professional is entitled to make is, "You look great!"

MrsPear · 27/10/2012 20:40

Well everytime i am around my husband's family they are all nudge nudge wink wink isn't she huge! And they think because they say it in their language it is fine; er no it isn't. Even DH has started although in fairness this is the first time i have got this far.

OP people always feel free to comment so yanbu as it is so bloody annoying

frumpet · 27/10/2012 21:01

Neat is the word to describe you , thats what i always say when i meet people who have nice tiny bumps instead of resembling the back end of a bus as i always did . NEAT.

I only told my employers each time (3 DC) that I was pregnant at 25 weeks (when you HAVE to tell them) no bump each time until 28 weeks.

Actually here is a funny story at 32 weeks 4 weeks before I finished work had a meeting with someone when I mentioned that I was going to be out of the office for 6 months - they asked why, was I going travelling! Shock

With first pregnancy GP panicked me saying bump too small sent me to hospital for scan at 34 weeks (so 2 weeks after meeting above!) and she (DD) was measuring just time. DD born at 40 weeks weighing 7lbs 5oz so just right (ie bang on average weight).

But same with subsequent pregnancies, both DSs normal weight (7 14 and 7 4) - I just have great stomach muscles!

So take it as compliment - a gym instructor told me in second pregnancy that women with good stomach muscles generally look small as muscles hold bump in, so when someone said it, I said "thanks" as I HEARD them saying "wow you have great stomach muscles!"

Soupqueen · 27/10/2012 22:55

Shoe size relates to pelvis size?! Eek, currently TTC, size 2 feet, husband over 6 foot. I'm doooooooomed!

NK2b1f2 · 27/10/2012 23:18

I was refused entry to the labour ward because it wasn't visiting time... Grin Hmm. I was 39 weeks, 8cm dilated and trying to get into the assessment unit to be admitted to have dd2 shortly after.
So much for small bumps. Ignore comments or take it as a compliment! Smile
