Do you want your child to learn God Save the Queen at School?

Is it important for all children at school in Britain to learn the National Anthem no matter their country of origin? Would it help integration at all? Or simply be a good way of increasing a sense of patriotism? Is it important even though so many people don't believe in God and don't support a monarchy?
Are you happy for your child to learn it? Would you like a different National Anthem?

I don't know the words to 'God Save The Queen' past the first verse.

No. We didn't learn it at school and I only know it because of years of hearing it drone on.
Im not royalist, patriotic or religious in the slightest so IMO it's one of the shitest songs ever!
But each to their own and all Smile

Oh you mean the Plum Song? 'Send her Victorias'

As long as they also teach the alternative lyrics ("King George, he had a date, he stayed out very late, he was the king. Queen Mary paced the floor, King George came home at four, she met him at the door, God save the king!").

Just kidding. I have nothing against learning the words to God Save The Queen, though I don't much care for the sentiment. I'm in favor of knowing the song as part of cultural literacy, while a bit uncomfortable with the element of indoctrination. Yes, I am perched up here on the fence, thank you very much.

I grew up partly in the US, and we pledged allegiance to the flag daily. No young child could possibly understand what that meant, and the words of the pledge make it even more incomprehensible. I would do away with that little ritual if I could.

I would object long and loud to my children being asked to learn GSTQ, mostly because I (and they) are Scottish and there is a highly objectionable verse in there about crushing rebellious Scots Angry

They do however know "Flower of Scotland" but I suspect that comes from attending Scotland games with their DF Wink

Had to learn it at Brownies for thinking day. Both verses (not the scot killing one). Never sang it at school, only at prizegiving, only no one told us that it was going to happen, so the orchestra started playing it and about halfway through you could hear some voices singing. Was a bit embarrassing actually.

Yes every child should learn to sing the national anthem in school, out of tune, in tune no matter.
I learned the Welsh one too in school and my Welsh was and still is atrocious. But I still remember it.

Here all my kids had to salute the flag (US) recite the pledge of allegiance and sing the national anthem daily at school. Makes for a lot of very patriotic people I have to say. I've never seen so many flags flying for no apparent reason till I lived in the US.
