Correcting teachers spelling mistakes

Kendodd · 26/10/2012 14:47

Now I have far from perfect spelling or grammar, but them I'm not a school teacher.

WIBU to point out the spelling mistakes in the teacher comments? If so then how? I don't want to come across as rude but if I were a teacher I would want them pointed out to me so that I can stop doing it.

*Please feel free to attack my spelling and grammar, as I said it's far from perfect.

Working in secondary, the newsletter gets rolled up to either act as a trumpet or to hit other students on the head with, so we don't tend to get parental corrections as so few actually make it home!

cherrypez · 26/10/2012 19:30

Whathasthecatdonenow I do that allthe time, write the wrong child's name in a comment, embarassing stuff!

whathasthecatdonenow · 26/10/2012 19:32

These are your friends!

I prefer it when the children correct my spelling, never had a parent do it but then I rarely make mistakes in books/coursework, only on the board. I just have moments when I cannot remember how something is spelt. I use it as a teaching tool - I either throw it out to the class to spell or write it incorrectly and let one of the kids correct me. I think it is character-building for them Wink.

teacherwith2kids · 26/10/2012 19:43

HT made a spelling error - well, an error which completely changed the meaning of a word and made the resultant sentence amusing - in a recent newsletter. She was actually quite gratified to find out how many people read the newsletter each week....

jamdonut · 26/10/2012 19:48

Most handwritten errors are from trying to do things quickly! I consider myself a good speller and good at grammar ( I got B in English language 'O' level taken a year early, back in 1980!), but when under pressure it can go out of the window quite easily. If you have seen how teacher's have to make comments, these days, in books, you would realise that it is hard to keep up perfect writing and spelling when you've had a long day.
Letters from school,I agree ,should be spell-checked, but occasionally they have to rattled off at short notice and the spelling mistakes/typos get noticed just as they are being given out!

I was a bit peeved when dd, aged about 9, had to write out a "corrected" word in her book at school several times over...

Definately
Definately
Definately

Shock

I thought about mentioning it to the teacher but she wasn't a very approachable sort so I didn't bother, but made sure dd knew the correct spelling.

messtins · 26/10/2012 19:57

teachers have to make comments!
There are mistakes on notices and signs all over the place that make teeth itch, but the hairdresser is not responsible for teaching anyone else how to communicate in writing.

queenofthepirates · 26/10/2012 19:57

I'm hoiking myself up onto my high horse and linking into this page at my local primary school www.roberthitchams.ik.org/p_History_of_SRH.ikml

Pedant that I am I've emailed the webmaster and the head teacher and... well it's still there.

I despair for the poor children, they'll probably become wanton heathens (faints dramatically) Smile

messtins - I disagree! My kids read everything. I want them to see correct spellings everywhere. They are more likely to read a sign at the hairdresser than a school newsletter which is put in their book bags by a TA and taken out at home.

Yes the Ark of the covenant was what Moses supposedly put the 10 commandments in, presumably that's what they meant? Would be a bit weird if they mixed it up with Noah's Ark, what with there being a catchy song and everything :)

After its creation by Moses, the Ark was carried by the Israelites during their 40 years of wandering in the desert. Whenever the Israelites camped, the Ark was placed in a special and sacred tent, called the Tabernacle.

Must be bored....... been googling Moses' Ark!!

ModreB · 26/10/2012 20:49

Sorry, but I correct in red pen. With a note in the margin pointing out why they have been corrected. But I am an Admin Manager with responsibility for correcting minutes and all correspondence. I will not tolerate faulty spelling from the people who are teaching my DC's spelling. Angry

Never had any come back (from teachers) yet Grin

EvilTwins · 26/10/2012 20:55

Not too hot on apostrophes though, eh?

Shagmundfreud · 26/10/2012 20:58

I have (discreetly) pointed out errors in my dc's teacher's display work.

If posters are there for reference they do really need to be correct.

fishface2 · 26/10/2012 20:59

I'm a teacher, if you corrected my spelling i'd never know about as I don't go back to work once it has been marked. Everyone makes mistakes and i am a good teacher as the exam success of my groups over the years has shown.
If I was a parent who had concerns about the literacy levels of my child's teacher then I would make an official complaint to the Head.
So yabu, if you're really concerned go to the Head.

lovebunny · 26/10/2012 21:00

teachers are people. normal people, like you, with their own lives and problems. and you want to add to them for your own satisfaction. way to go, mumsnet. what a lovely crowd you are.

ilovesparklythings · 26/10/2012 21:08

noisytoys - sweeeet! they would appreciate the bear drawing I'm sure!

Last year my child was told (in a written note) to use his "Joint up writing" more often.... [hshock] surely thats not right/write/wright [hconfused] [hwink]

fishface2 · 26/10/2012 21:16

Well said bunny!

QueenMaeve · 26/10/2012 21:37

This is my teaching day.
10 groups of children from primary 1 to 7, receiving literacy withdrawal support.
Each session lasting from 20 mins to 45 mins. About 1 minute turnover time between each group. Constant the entire day.
While I am checking that 6 or 8 children all have their sound cards back in their packs, their reading books in their folders, their little white boards and pens in their too, I am writing down their reading for the night, or a little note about what sounds I want mummy to go over. Sometimes I'll be sticking something into the notebook too. The other group is usually coming into the room as I'm finishing this off.
I love my job, I get results, I get children reading.
So its just lovely when parents take a pen and correct a letter I've left out in a notebook. Imagine if they took that pen to write thank you in the book.
Rant over Grin

Hulababy · 26/10/2012 21:46

Love it when a correction returned is incorrect! Oh, the joy of that :)
