Did my weekly shop online last night, and since the money just doesn't buy as much as it used to, I added mostly "Smartprice" stuff to keep within my budget. It was delivered this morning and in the usual hurly-burly of getting it all in (whilst preventing toddler and terrier from escaping) I signed for it without paying attention to the substitutions.

When I unpacked, I found that a few of the smartprice staple items had been substituted. For the NICE ham stuff. In larger quantities. As a result, I'll be able to cook at least 2 extra (nice) meals for my family before the next shop. It's a small thing, but it really does feel nice.

Just think the packers are all on a low wage too. Bless them. Perhaps pop in your store if that's where they pack from with a card or ring to say thanks?

For goodness sake don't ring the store or draw attention to it - you'll get some poor sod into trouble!

Make sure you make it a generic thanks! I shouldn't imagine Asda bosses would appreciate it as much as you!!

What a lovely thing to have done for you. I am glad you're managing to get some more meals out of it. The amount of food we as a country throw away is crazy.

I may be wrong here...but I always thought that if thy gave you a substitution that was more expensive, they charged you for it? Unless of course, you opt out of substitutes? Because they scan all the items and run it through the till the day of delivery. Could be totally wrong. Lovely for you if it's the same price :)

Don't pop in with a card! Seriously, don't! Even a generic one could make someone suspicious. A thank-you card would be so out of the ordinary!

Dont mention it. They might have been pissed off with their employers and decided to treat a few people ! You could get them sacked. I hate that inane drivel they have to come out with on some tills, and was disgusted to find out they can be disciplined if they don't.

Asda have always done great substitutiond for me. I've never had anything unusual and they always replace with better quality. They get a lot of criticism on here but I never have any problems :)

I didn't know if Asda did it, but that's what Tesco do if they are out of something, you never pay extra for a substitution. That's one of the benefits of online shopping.

I wouldn't draw attention to it, because I wouldn't want to get anyone into trouble. But it wasn't just standard "like-for-like" substitutions, because in addition to the brands being better the quantities were much bigger. They charged the same as the smartprice stuff would have cost, so I paid quite a bit less than the items would have cost.

I always order smart price asda and it normally gets substituted with naice stuff which I pay smart price price for and sometimes random extras like Emma's kitchen fairy cakes or jam tarts.

Tesco definitely substitute up, but don't charge. Half of the valuefest that was our order got upgraded last week, some of it to brands, not just own brand too.

I think someone at the store has a vendetta against their manager and is being passive-agressively generous [hgrin] Win for you!

Think it's because more people are buying value these days so it's more likely to run out, mushrooms for example, ours never has the huge trays of elcheapo mushrooms these days

Oh really, of course you won't get the packer into trouble, this is part of the service. The items are not 'rung through the tills individually' either, (to whoever said that) how do you think that would work with the amount of orders going out every day?!

Send a card to say thanks if you like, just saying you're pleased with the service, nobody will be in trouble!

We have never had any trouble with Asda - just once I was a bit when I didn't get a sub for bread! I mean, come on. Anyway the guy who delivered it said that he didn't come into people's houses any longer as he was once locked in by a lady who hadn't had her bread delivered!! Imagine. He was kind of apologising for not carrying the shopping right in for me as I was big and pregnant.

I've been big and pregnant FOREVER, it seems. Sob.
