ds has college 2 and a half days a week, this is a full time course. previously he was at another college with so many gaps in the day
it does not help with them at all imo. When they go out to work it will be such a shock to the system.
all this free time is meant to be study time, pah - they would have to be very motivated to spend this free time in the library.

why arent they full time anymore,?
even if they were say mornings at least it would be better than it seems to be. one of his friends goes to a full time college course 2 days a week [hshock]

She did say pretty early on in the thread it was 'not university', actually.

People just didn't read it very carefully and/or were assuming it was also relevant to talk about FE college as a preparation for university (which it was).

When I was at tech (late 60s) we had lectures 9 to 4 Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday was half day (but there were sports for sporty types) Thursday was the long day from 9 to 6 (to make up for Wednesday half day) and Friday 9 to 4. We did all our essays etc in the evenings, weekends or in my case Wednesday afternoon. This was a Child Care course, mainly for 16 to 18 year olds.
My DS is at tech now and he does 2 and a half days a week too. I must admit my first thought was the same as the OP.
Some time over the last 40 years it's all changed.
And as for preparing for University my DS and his fellow students on the course are highly unlikely to go, so preparation for it isn't relevant.

My dd is going to college next year and I sincerely hope she will not be getting 9-5 contact time. I want her to spend time organising her own work, writing long essays and reading lots of books, not sitting comfortably in a chair whilst somebody else does all the work. Otherwise I shall not want to see her as a student at my own university in three years time.

My 20 yesar old son is doing a full-time college course, 2 and a half days a week. The rest of the time he has to work to pay his way...if he was at college properly full time, he wouldn't be able to work as well, and I can't afford to support him
