to think you don't walk into someone else's house and start fiddling with their heating controls

A friend came round earlier to use my computer. Her broadband has gone kaput and she needed to send some emails urgently.

She came in and the first thing she did was to turn the heating controls right down.

The thermostat is set at 18, it's not cold enough for it to be on anyway, all the radiators are cold.

Bloody cheek. It's irrationally peed me right off

YANBU.

I had a similar situation.

A woman I didn't know, dropped my sister off to stay, because it was a long journey she stayed over night.

During the evening, while she shivered in Barbie's clothes, she asked my sister to turn up the thermostat! Confused

I just sat there, dumbfounded.

freddiefrog · 24/10/2012 13:07

She hadn't even taken her coat off at that point, so I would have thought removing layers was the next reasonable step rather than adjusting my heating.

I did turn it back up

It's not cold or warm in here, sort of middling really, I'm wearing jeans, a shirt and a long wooly cardigan and I'm comfortable

I'm ridiculously touchy about people fiddling with the heating knob, I'd rather people rifle through my undies drawer than mess with my heating Grin

She must be a good friend or have the hide of a rhino!

We live in a big old Victorian house with sash windows and heating it is fecking expensive, but I normally set the thermostat to 18 when we have guests. I hate it when people come to visit in the depths of winter wearing a tshirt, then complain they're cold Hmm. Wear a long sleeved shirt and a jumper, then I'll listen to your complaints. I don't have many friends.

freddiefrog · 24/10/2012 13:16

She's a fairly good friend

We are fairly laid back, people are welcome to help themselves to what they want and make themselves at home, but fiddling with the heating is 'not on'

I have friends who arrive in t-shirts and then turn the thermostat up to 25. Drives me nuts!

Lancelottie · 24/10/2012 13:21

ooh, could I add a quick grumble about DS and the bloody lighting in my house?

He's at home sick and keeps coming into MY work space and turning off the lights 'to save power'. I am ancient and can't see to read without lots of lights on. Grrrr.

cumfy · 24/10/2012 14:09

I genuinely wonder if someone had "adjusted" her broadband router settings in revenge for her previous meddling.[hgrin]

garlicbaguette · 24/10/2012 14:15

YANBU!!!! What a nerve Shock

A family 'friend' has a thing about fuel economy. He goes round people's houses turning things off at the wall - more than one freezer has thawed due to his stealth switching.

He is a fucking weirdo though. I won't have him here.

garlicbaguette · 24/10/2012 14:16

lol, cumfy [hwink]

aldiwhore · 24/10/2012 14:18

Your house, your bills, your heat, your choice. You are heating master.

YANBU.

However in a working environment, I feel it's fairer to have the heating LOWER than higher as it's much easier to put on a jumper than it is to do the filing in your knickers... and much more pleasant all round.

lljkk · 24/10/2012 14:20

Isn't the normal thing if you're hot is to ask for a cold drink? Confused yanbu.

ethelb · 24/10/2012 14:40

Stealth switching is weird. And surely if the freezer thaws it ruins the food and isn't very economic.

I had a party once where I had food in the oven and people (multiple) kept on switching it off. When I asked them why they said "I didn't know the oven was supposed to be on" Hmm

garlicbaguette · 24/10/2012 15:20

Good lord, Ethel, you had several of these entitled nutcases in your house at once?! [hshock] I wonder if they'd rearrange your furniture, too, given half the chance?

I've just thought - can I borrow them, please? Maybe they'll walk in here and instantly start tidying up & cleaning?

Or even take your coat off Grin

I don't mind the stealth light switchers. One of our neighbours is a bit of a light fiend and is always turning lights off when he comes round, although I wasn't that impressed when he switched the downstairs loo light off when I was still sitting on it (light switch is outside)

"DH used to be hot all the time and want the house arctic, then he lost 3 stone, now he feels the cold too. So those who are being all morally superior about the heat, point out that they must not feel the cold due to their excess weight and suggest they go on a diet. grin (FYI, being cold turns me into a bitch)"

I had to laugh at that. BIL and sis are both very overweight. And I am very slim so I do feel the cold more easily.

Gargula · 24/10/2012 16:31

My parents turn up the heating in our house (set to 18). TBH i don't mind, i can see how 18 may be too low for them, particularly my mum who is a tiny 7 1/2 stone, and they are generally helping me out by looking after my kids.

Just gotta try and remember to turn it down or I swelter (I am double my mums weight, lots of insulation).
