Drive in this morning, pitch black. I counted 13 cars that didn't have all their lights working (one had both headlights out FFS) and 3 cyclists that had no lights or high vis at all (only saw them because they were under streetlights).

Please make sure all the lights on your car are clean and working, and that you have lights on your bike so I can see you please.

Thank you :)

Some cars are a nightmare to change headlight bulbs, I know of some where the official way to do it involves removing the front bumper and unbolting the whole headlamp unit!

I think the Institute of Advanced Motorists say that you should never have just the sidelights on when driving, if you need any kind of lights, it should be at least dipped beams. And as for it saving energy, the amount of energy used by headlights is around 100W total, when the power output of a car engine is 100,000W, so it's 0.1% which is pretty much unmeasurable.

And don't get me started on incorrect use of fog lights. You don't turn them on when there's any hint of fog, they are only to be used when visibility is that poor that someone might not see your tail lights in time to stop them running into the back of you.

Monky yes only put fog lights on for visibility less than 100m according to Highway Code

Sidelights in most countries are called parking lights - and that's all they should be used for, when parking at night on a road without streetlights (legal requirement).

halfords are fabulous at replacing light bulbs. (some cars are more awkward thatn others!)

Yesterday silver car, thick fog, didn't see it almost until it was actually passing me. Mucky it was on a two car stretch of the road.

It is really hard to get the old fashioned bike lights. The wee ones are fairly bright though
