Went to see doc today as I've been suffering with thrush from breastfeeding and mastitis.
I got something for the thrush from the health visitor last week over the phone but then mastitis kicked in so I needed antibiotics.
After consultation where he asked me what I thought it was and what treatment I wanted (eh?) I asked him to check dds mouth to see if he thought she had thrush as I had not spotted any symptoms and wondered if we should carry on with the gel/cream or whether it was actually just the start of the mastitis and he said hmm well does she have an appointment?! He had the briefest of looks and ushered me out.
I left thinking that was uncalled for..surely mum and new baby suffering from related condition don't need to make seperate appointments!

Ahh he is young so this must explain the ICE thing. I've never heard it from the older docs in the practice. I did say to dh when I got home I reckon he has been on some sort of customer satisfaction course!!
I can see why piggybacking in on other appts can be a pain and slow things down but I was literally saying I don't think she has thrush can you just confirm it so I can stop her gel.
No he didn't treat her or look at her notes just a quick glance

I will probably not see him again but only cos there are lots of other doctors to choose from.
We are quite rural; 10 miles from nearest town so docs tend to be quite accommodating, will even come out If needed and you can always get an appointment the same day you call. So no complaints with the practice.
I think maybe I scared him a bit as he mumbled about needing to have a look so I stood up and whipped off my top in true bf old hand fashion and he got all flappy about needing a chaperone! Never occurred to me!

If I name change I'll go for that 'Bit GP toe' haha!!!

Yeah the ICE thing. I have to ask that alllllll the time. Does my head in because patients look at me like I have 2 heads for asking 'so what are your ideas, concerns and expectations'

Maybe it was the breastfeeding thing too, most male docs get quite freaked out about that the little lambs bless em :D

blackeyedsusan · 22/10/2012 22:28

you would have been unreasonable to ask whether he could look at something completely unrelated but boob and breastfeeder are linked... all the bloody time if she is like dd

Purplehonesty · 22/10/2012 22:34

Hehe every man I know does a cough cough ahhh look at the sky thing when they see me feeding. Does make me laugh.

The rest of our docs are perhaps a little older and wear tweed so they haven't heard of ICE, they just give you a good squeeze and say oh yeah you've got x now nip down and see jimmy the pill Mannie and he'll sort you out!

I quite like the way doctors ask what you think is up etc. I remember going in with ds having soiling issues (he was 5) and, after copious amounts of googling and forum reading I suspected encroprisis. After explaining the issue and chatting she did ask if I had any ideas and I mentioned encroprisis. I was right! Felt well clever.

Yanbu. Your thrush & DDs mouth are related. Theres no point treating u if dd is going to give it back to you. I think the doc should have ASKED to look at DDs mouth.
