To find it irritating that no one seems to be able to spell my bloody name?

LollopingLil · 22/10/2012 10:20

Sorry, I'm obviously in a generally pissy mood.

I've had emails from four different people already this morning misspelling my bloody name and it irks. Probably irrational, but my name is NOT common-variant-number-one (let's say Jane). It's common-variant-number-bloody-two (Jayne). I have an extra letter, but it's still a very, very common spelling! Miss it out and it's not me.

Misspell my surname and I couldn't give two hoots, it's forrin and hard to remember - I get that, it's fine. Misspell my first name and I feel 'not seen', but that it would be far too petty to raise with you. I feel especially narked if I've paid a lot of attention to spelling your name.

I am totally, irrationally U on this but by god, it rankles!

People aren't spelling it wrong on purpose (presumably) hence YABU.

OwlLady I'm confused what the difference in pronunciation of Lewis and Louis would be?

OwlLady · 22/10/2012 11:23

haha

you don't pronounce the s in Louis

Bubblemoon · 22/10/2012 11:26

My workmate is called Mr Wiltshire and regularly gets junk mail addressed to Mr Willyhire. We're in the insurance business, not male escorting FYI.

redskyatnight · 22/10/2012 11:28

Yes, annoying. Especially so when the misspelling is from someone who knows you well. Even more so when it's in response to an email where you've actually written your name at the bottom (and your name is part of your email address) so all the responder has to do is copy what's in front of them .

PropositionJoe · 22/10/2012 11:30

Louis is pronounced Louie!!

OwlLady · 22/10/2012 11:32

one of my cousins insists on spelling his name Lewie as well, like some sort of Disney character

Honsandrevels · 22/10/2012 11:32

I have a friend called Michael who uses his full name so signs off emails e.g. Regards, Michael. He gets so cross at the replies he gets that shorten his name like 'Thanks Mick; Dear Mike etc. Apparently it happens all the time!

I think that's even worse than misspelling!

windsurf74 · 22/10/2012 11:36

MIL spells my name 'Ratchel'

I mean. Seriously. Rachael I could accept. It is a variation. But where the hell does she get the 't' from?!!!

I wouldn't mind - she's been told, and she STILL continues to do it. Guess I'll have to put it down to the fact that she's thick. ;)

purplepenguin86 · 22/10/2012 11:47

I think Louis Smith has muddied the waters re pronunciation of Louis! He seems to pronounce his name Lewis, which is just confusing really.

ChessieFL · 22/10/2012 11:55

My name is Catherine but I am regularly addressed as Caroline. Even in reply emails at work when all they have to do is read my name at the bottom of my email. I could accept a different spelling (and frequently do get those!) but Caroline ISN'T MY NAME!!! (no offence to any Caroline's, I have nothing against the name, it's just not mine!)

throckenholt · 22/10/2012 11:56

Louis can be said Louie (french) or Lewis (american ?) - so I think it fair enough if you don't know how to say it when seeing it written. Lewis I presume is never said Louie (am willing to be corrected).

Abzs · 22/10/2012 12:07

I am constantly amazed by the number of people who can't cope with my surname being of the Irish O' variety.

The most annoying are airline online check-in forms that ask for your name "as it is written on your passport", then don't allow apostrophes...

Bubblemoon · 22/10/2012 12:29

ChessieFL - my friend is called Carolyn, but everyone calls her Catherine! She's ALWAYS saying what you say about the email thing - her name was there, and they still got it wrong.

BlueSuedeWitchesHat · 22/10/2012 12:35

There is a woman at my work who calls me Gemma every single time she speaks to me.

It's Emma. EMMA!

I have corrected her numerous times and yet she still does it. The other day, she called me Emma and corrected it to Gamma! It makes me really angry, I've worked here for 5 years, It's got to the point where I feel like she just doesn't value me enough to bother to learn my name.

And don't get me started on people trying to double barrel with my middle name (Jane, and to be fair I WAS born in the 80s but still, there is NO hyphen!)

YANBU in any way at all!

fraserboysmum · 22/10/2012 12:46

SO pleased i'm not the only one who silently seethes ( or not so silently ! ) when someone spells my name wrong ! Especially frustrating when the same people do it over and over, even though it's been ( patiently !) pointed out to them !

TheCunnyFuntOfEastwick · 22/10/2012 13:27

My name is Melanie, shortened to Mel. You wouldn't believe the amount of wrong spellings I've seen of it, and also people who write Mell Hmm

Also, DPs surname is similar to Leighton, he has seen it spelt Layton, Laighton, Leghton, Laghton, Leithton. It's ridiculous!

Gracelo · 22/10/2012 14:06

Happens to me all the time. Ok, I have forrin names and there is an almost identical English version of my first name which might be confusing. I don't care if people get it wrong if they have never seen it written down before but there are plenty of people who I have known for years who still can't be bothered to get it right. It bugs me.

merryberry · 22/10/2012 14:11

It is irritating, especially when the damned correct spelling is in the email address, my email text and appears all over the place correctly spelt. I assume the person persitently getting it wrong despite a couple of corrections is inflexible and careless and possibly lazy and adjust my expectations/plans with then accordingly.

ThalianotFailure · 22/10/2012 14:20

how I feel your pain. The shortened form of my name (which I always use) can be spelt about 6 different ways. Fair enough if you've never seen the way I spell it, but when people reply to an email that has it spelt 'my' way in the address, and also in the sign off, and spell it wrongly it makes my blood boil, especially as I work in an industry where words are important! It's one of the main reasons why I wanted a name for DD that couldn't be shortened and could only be spelt one way.

MardyBra · 22/10/2012 14:21

I bet it's Rachael. That extra "a" has always struck me as illogical.

ThalianotFailure · 22/10/2012 14:32

isn't that how it would have been spelt in the original Hebrew (Hebrew? Aramaic?)? Like Michael? Only for some reason the A in Rachel has been dropped but not in Michael.

KitCat26 · 22/10/2012 15:21

I feel your pain.
My name is Catherine, obviously there are loads of variations and I have had them all. I don't have much imagination (as you can see from my mn name) so the abbreviation I use is Cathy. Frequently I get addressed as Cathie.

starmaker7 · 22/10/2012 15:23

my OH still dosnt spell my name right after 17 years ,ive given up tbh!!

starmaker7 · 22/10/2012 15:24

*doesnt

Absy · 22/10/2012 15:31

YANBU. It's annoying, particularly if its something like via email so they can see how your name is spelt.

I have one twatty colleague who keeps on misspelling my name. 1. It's not complicated 2. he uses the more unusual spelling 3. we've worked together for TWO AND A HALF years
