Long time lurker, first time poster.

I have been advised to join twitter (career related) but I hate the idea. It looks like a constant stream of gibberish. It doesn't help that I have a built in resistance to anything endorsed by Stephen Fry (prepares for flaming by Fry fans), but maybe I'm stuck in the dark ages. Maybe there is a point to this endless expressing of opinions by everyone on everything.

Is it worthwhile? Is resistance futile? Am I being unreasonable?

Don't do it.... It is rubbish.

I love twitter, I rant and nobody knows it's me. I have just had to join for work to so i'm thinking I shouldn't get the 2 accounts mixed up!

if it's career related then unless your profession is media drivel then you should be ok - try following a bunch of organisations/individuals tweeting on your 'topic' and see... I have a work account and a personal account and they are very different (and neither follow 'celebs').

twitter is just a tool - what matters is who you connect with on it, not the tool itself. (would be like dismissing tv entirely just because 90% of what's on is drivel).

Don't follow Stephen Fry. Do follow career-related people/orgs, blogs and news people you like, a few comedians for light relief. At first follow people and see how it works before tweeting much yourself, though feel free to retweet stuff you find pertinent. It's mostly in my experience breaking news and links to other sources eg articles and blogs. Think of tweets as public newsy Facebook status updates.

YABU - it's a great platform, use it to your advantage.

If it's for your career you should give it a try. Are you on LinkedIn too?

We use twitter for our business. Its attracted loads of local customers.
But if it was just for me, I couldn't be bothered tbh.

I completely agree with you. We have been advised to tweet as it could do loads for our business apparently. I can't be arsed with it, and there are too many morons associated with it. The very thought it makes me feel stabby - why do people assume people want to read their every thought and action?Through work we met quite a famous TV person the other day and he advised us to join Twitter and I gave him a similar stream of opinion. He was going to tweet our meeting with a photo but has apparently decided against it

Our FB page and blog is quite enough to keep up.

My dh uses LinkedIn and has got business that way.

Just made him sound like a prostitute!! He isn't. No experience of twitter but if its needed for your work then go for it.

OP - I was a confirmed Twitter HATER with a passion, until my boss sent me on a course to find out how to do it properly! Use it all the time for work now and it has been great for engaging directly with our clients and promoting our events. We have had a lot of benefit from it!
I also recommend LinkedIn though, which is great for work-related contacts.

As MaybeNow said, it's just a tool. You can completely tailor your timeline to be work focused.

I tweet anonymously because one day I might have a career again and will want to tweet serious business things. I will set up a new twitter profile at that point. Right now my timeline entirely consists of people that make me laugh & random filth.

In my industry a lot of twittering happens!

Ignoring Twitter and Facebook because there are people on it you don't like is about as smart as ignoring the internet because it's full of porn and stupid people.

They are tools. They are tools that aren't going away. They are tools that are changing the way people do business and help their customers.

Ignore it at your own peril. Keep with the times or be left in the dirt.

I admin the FB and twitter accounts for a local charity.
The way it has evolved is that the FB page is mostly used by 'real' people and the twitter account is mostly used by professionals and organisations that work in a similar area.
So twitter is good for finding networking, papers, press releases etc. which are relevant to what we do - and letting those organisations know what we are doing professionally.
But FB is more local and personal - it's where I feel that we are building a real little community.

That's it piprarabbit. I don't think I'm being "left in the mud" by not tweeting because it doesn't fit my business which is an unusual one. FB works brilliantly for us because like you say, it's like a community, and a lot of what we post is photo based.

You can post pictures to Twitter as well, BTW.

Twitter and FB is a big pile of pants! An EX colleague posted on twitter how much she hated her job, she slagged the company off and even stated that she was attending interviews and that she was handing in her notice. She did all this before notifying the company of her intentions to leave their employment. For someone who is supposed to be 'oh so intelligent' she was such a stupid cow! Good luck to her reputation if she keeps that up. Future employers could easily read that by google search. FB is like WTF! I couldn't give a shit that so and so has just consumed a sausage sarnie to make her fat hide fatter and all the rest of the utter shite that is posted. Get a f*cking life!

MY dd uses twitter some of her college lecturers tweet stuff and what she is going to be working as in the theatre and music industry they use twitter , I still dont get it though

I love twitter! I don't follow celebs though, normal people's ramblings are more fun.
