Friend made a tongue in cheek comment about a few of my friends babies eating houmous from weaning age.

I love houmous, therefore get to eat my babies scraps :) and have a stinky little friend along the way Wink

Seriously - is it still considered as a 'posh' food?

I'd sooner have Micro Chips than hummus, and I'm not very fond of chips. That said I think I did once have some caramelised onion hummus, which was fairly pleasant.

Has anyone tried broad bean hummus? I'm almost tempted to try that.

lol toast toppers look like sick in a jar

I once went out with a guy who invited me round for lunch and did some for me on toast obv. Not sure how impressive he thought it was Hmm

at least dh went the extra mile and did me pan flair for lunch:o

BananaBubbles · 19/10/2012 17:21

Ok.Now I'm going to have to make myself even more of an idiot, and ask what pan flair is.Blush

happygilmore · 19/10/2012 17:22

Honestly, toast toppers really do look like vomit, that's the best way to describe them. Little bits of ham bobbing around in there Envy

BananaBubbles · 19/10/2012 17:23

Seem like even more of an idiot sorry. I give up.Blush

mrsfuzzy · 19/10/2012 17:23

as owllady said it's like the contents of a new born baby nappy.

OwlLady · 19/10/2012 17:29

this was 90s, pan flair used to be in an orange packet that you got out of the freezer and it had chicken and veg in a white wine sauce I think. It was actually quite nice, but I was in my late teens so it may have been crap :o

BananaBubbles · 19/10/2012 17:30

Thankyou.

OwlLady · 19/10/2012 17:35

pan flair :o

When I have soaked the chickpeas for 24 hours, boiled them, simmered them, mashed them with olive oil, lemon juice and tahini paste...houmous is posh.

When I have bought it in a tub from the supermarket...it is not Grin

HTH

IfNotNowThenWhen · 19/10/2012 17:53

There is a vast difference between supermarket hummous and the proper stuff.
I used to hate it, but when I lived in a greek/turkish area and used to buy it from the local greek shop I bloody loved it.
It's great with chips to dip in it too.

And yes, it is a bit of a MC cliche.

lljkk · 19/10/2012 17:58

Is that like the English thinking that Levi's are designer jeans? What a hoot.

Where I'm from you buy new Levis for $25 at the discount mart with homeless drunks staggering around outside on litter strewn streets, deep in downtown where you wouldn't dare walk around after dark.

Spatsky · 19/10/2012 17:59

Hummous is lovely! All you hummous-haterz are crazy.

I like all the different flavoured hummous in Waitrose, lemon and coriander is bestest.

noblegiraffe · 19/10/2012 18:09

I think anything with chickpeas in it is on the lentil side of things in the food stakes. A bit liberal hippyish.

happygilmore · 19/10/2012 18:16

See I don't like the homemade stuff, and the best one I've tried from Asda Confused

Middle class wannabe here.

quirrelquarrel · 19/10/2012 18:17

It's Yummyness for the Everyman Smile

crashdoll · 19/10/2012 18:19

I love houmous but the proper Israeli stuff not the crappy Tesco stuff and don't even get me started on reduced fat houmous!!

Growlithe · 19/10/2012 18:20

No, it's not posh. Since being on MN I have learned that I grew up on a sink estate in Liverpool (I had never heard the term 'sink estate' before), and I eat it. It must be common. Grin

wonderstuff · 19/10/2012 18:28

Thomas in our house too - and it seems I mis-pronounce guacamole Blush

Stiffybyng · 19/10/2012 18:43

Property, I think DH was winding her up a bit too. She was going to buy DD some chocolate buttons as a snack when she was 8 months old and he told her that DD didn't eat chocolate. She was astonished and asked 'what DOES she eat then?' and he said 'hummous'.

She is turning into a food adventurer though. Last time we went to stay, she'd bought some frozen couscous. She sat and watched while we ate it.

BegoniaBampot · 19/10/2012 19:00

Posh, smosh! Proper hummus is lovely with warm freshly baked pitta bread but it has to have some olive oil and some paprika sprinkled on top. The stuff you get in the UK, especially the supermarkets just isn't the same.

BegoniaBampot · 19/10/2012 19:00

And don't get me started on falafel and shwarma.

ElaineBenes · 19/10/2012 19:02

It's street food in most of the middle east! Certainly not considered posh at all!!

samandi · 19/10/2012 19:06

It isn't posh at all Confused
