AIBU to ask if any of you have bought half price chocolate in WHSmith?

I got into a conversation with my family over this, all of us had never said yes to the cashier to buy some. The way that practically beg you to buy their "half price chocolate" makes me think that the chocolate has probably been left by a radiator and got that yukky white crust on it.

I feel sorry for their staff having to flog it all day long. AIBU to ask if you have ever said yes to the chocolate? Or am I right in thinking their upselling stretegy makes me want to avoid the shop?

The chocolate thing in wh smith ans countless oher shops is just drug pushing on behalf of the refined sugar industry.

MY Dh works for a very large, well known travel company that you don't just book with. They all have to upsell or they get disciplined. Think "would you like to hire a car with your holiday?" or "Can i have £200 pounds worth of Euros please?", "Well, I can do you XXXEuros for £250" They are continually told to try for the customer's "full spend" or "full wallet". They are even expected to phone up people who have booked holidays and "remind" them about foreign exchange, car hire, travel insurance etc.

If they don't sell enough this way it affects their "grade" at their review and, therefore, affects their pay and can even lead to not having a job any more. It's a horrible policy and it doesn't work. DH says they lose a lot of customers through it. It's out of touch folk at the top of the tree who have no idea about how things are on the shop floor who come up with these policies It's not new, though. DH has worked for this company for nearly 15 years and has had to do this for most of that time.

Sparklingbrook- I like your idea! I love stationery far too much so would be more tempted by a half-price pen with my refill pad than a chocolate bar.

Oooh yes Iodine.

'Half price post it notes or a note pad Madam?'

Don't mind if I do. Grin

It is still overpriced even when half price in WH Smiths.

I don't care if it's just me who buys the chocolate... i have no willpower with chocolate at all (& yes it tastes delicious, half-price or not!).
